Premier League speeds up Christmas period

VnExpressVnExpress25/10/2023

The Premier League will play consecutive matches over the Christmas period, except on December 25, with the first match in 28 years taking place on Christmas Day, December 24.

The already busy Christmas and New Year schedule in the Premier League is likely to get even busier this season. According to British newspaper Sportmail , the Premier League is altering the fixture schedule in late December and January to create a festive TV show for fans, with December 25 being the only day without a match on television.

The Premier League announced TV options and changes for games in early December, and will announce the Christmas and New Year fixtures on October 27. There are still a number of factors to consider before any official announcement, including travel, police and broadcast issues.

Chelsea's trip to Wolves, scheduled for December 23, is being discussed to be pushed back a day and take place on Christmas Eve. If approved, it would be the first time a top-flight match has been played on December 24 since Leeds beat Man Utd 3-1 at Elland Road in 1995.

However, the idea has sparked a backlash from Chelsea and Wolves fans, with Chelsea recently deciding to end subsidies for away matches, while Wolves are concerned about security as West Midlands police are already stretched thin on Christmas Eve patrols and safety on the streets.

The organizers have just announced the rescheduling of seven matches that were scheduled to take place at 3pm on December 2, London time. Accordingly, Man Utd will visit Newcastle at 8pm on the same day, while the big match between Man City and Tottenham at Etihad will take place at 4:30pm on December 3.

Four matches, Bournemouth vs Aston Villa, Chelsea vs Brighton, Liverpool vs Fulham, West Ham vs Crystal Palace will take place at 2pm on December 3 because European matches take place in the middle of the week.

Due to the Qatar 2022 World Cup taking place in winter, last season's Premier League festive fixtures only kicked off on Boxing Day, December 26. Of the 11 days that followed, only December 29 had any Premier League matches broadcast on television.

Sportmail further reveals that at least one match will be postponed to January 2, 2024, when the FA Cup third round takes place on the first weekend of the new year.
