The man who volunteered to donate land three times in Tam Son

The remote and isolated land of Tam Son has experienced a difficult past. Previously, the only way to get to this area was by ferry across Phu Ninh Lake. Later, the State supported investment in building the Tam Anh - Tam Son route, Thuoc Hot bridge, and the route connecting Tam Lanh (Phu Ninh), ending the situation of being isolated and having to travel by ferry.

Ten years ago, the road from Tam Hiep to Tam Tra through Tam Son was renovated and paved. However, the local government faced many challenges when clearing land to widen the road, affecting hundreds of households with land, trees, and crops. Some households were not clear-headed and hesitated to hand over the land.

While the work of mobilizing and propagating for some households was at a standstill, Mr. Pham Ngoc Yen (My Dong village, Tam Son) took the lead in donating the entire affected land area for the State to open a road.

“I told my wife that my hometown has been struggling with travel for many years, so now I am donating it to have a bigger and more beautiful road and also for my children and grandchildren to benefit from. My wife and I agreed, so my family did not accept compensation. And we were even happier when we saw that I volunteered to donate the land, so everyone stopped comparing pros and cons and proactively handed over the land to build the road,” Mr. Yen recalled.

The formation of DH8 route helps traffic from the center of Nui Thanh district to the highlands of Tam Son and vice versa become more convenient. Along both sides of the opened main road, hundreds of solid houses have sprung up, contributing to changing the face of the new rural area of Tam Son.

Continuing to receive attention from all levels, most recently, the Thuan Yen Tay residential road connecting My Dong was expanded and upgraded to the scale of a type A rural road, with a roadbed width of both concrete and earthen shoulder of 6.5m. With the motto of the State investing capital, people donating land, trees, relocating architectural objects...

Without waiting for the government to persuade him, Mr. Pham Ngoc Yen once again volunteered to let the surveying unit set up markers to clear the land through his family's fields. Mr. Yen said: "The old road is small and narrow, going across the fields, and full of potholes, so it will be dangerous for students to travel during the rainy season and at night. If I don't donate, I don't know when Tam Son will have an asphalt road connecting Thuan Yen Tay to My Dong and connecting with Phu Ninh and Tien Phuoc districts."

Because the donated land area was not enough to meet the design, the Tam Son Commune Land Donation Campaign Committee came to his house to persuade him to donate more land. Mr. Tran Cong Hieu - Secretary of the Tam Son Commune Party Committee said: "When we came to persuade him again (the third time), we were quite hesitant, worried that Mr. Pham Ngoc Yen's family would refuse because the total affected area of his household was up to a sao of rice fields. But it was wonderful that his family immediately nodded in agreement."

Mr. Pham Ngoc Yen's land donation for road construction has spread throughout the villages, becoming a shining example to help the locality untie the knot for some households who do not agree with the general policy. After donating the land, he and the advocacy groups went to the families whose land was affected to convince them. Seeing the shining example and realizing the benefits when Thuan Yen Tay - My Dong road was expanded and upgraded, many people also "followed" Mr. Yen and voluntarily donated land to open the road.

Up to now, 80% of the DH8 road has been completed and there are only a few bottlenecks that cannot be constructed because the people need time and money to move the fences and gates. "We thank Mr. Pham Ngoc Yen and the kind people who forgot their own interests and contributed to the common work of the commune" - Secretary of the Tam Son Commune Party Committee Tran Cong Hieu added.
