Cham people green the land of flying sand Tuan Tu

Amidst the vast white sand dunes of Phuoc Dinh commune, the name Hung Ky - a Cham ethnic man in Tuan Tu village has become the pride of the local people. From nothing, Mr. Hung Ky rose to become rich by growing green asparagus on dry sandy land, opening up a sustainable development direction for local agriculture.

Turn white sand into fertile green land

Tuan Tu is a typical land of the southern region of Khanh Hoa province: a lot of sunshine, strong winds, barren land, difficult cultivation. Before 2010, people mainly grew corn, peanuts or grass for livestock, with unstable income. Mr. Hung Ky also used to "sell his face to the land, sell his back to the sky" all year round but his life was still lacking.

In 2015, through training courses of the Farmers' Association and the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, he learned about the asparagus growing model - a plant that adapts well to hot, dry climates, has few pests and diseases, and has high economic value. After a period of research, he boldly borrowed capital, renovated 3 sao of sandy soil, installed a drip irrigation system and planted the first crop of asparagus. There were many initial difficulties: dry soil, high investment costs, unfamiliar techniques, so there were times when only a few clumps survived in the entire field. But with his industrious nature and determination, Mr. Ky persevered in the field, both learning and drawing on practical experience to achieve success.

In 2018, his asparagus field began to yield stable harvests, with a yield of 7-10 kg/sao/day, sold on the market for 40,000-60,000 VND/kg. His monthly income increased from a few million VND to tens of millions of VND, helping him quickly pay off his debt, expand his area to more than 1 hectare, and invest in an energy-saving irrigation system and a small processing area at home.

Not stopping at his own success, Mr. Hung Ky actively shares his experience with the villagers. He guides the techniques of planting, fertilizing and preserving products to maintain quality when selling to the market. From a few households initially learning, up to now, the whole village of Tuan Tu has more than 20 households growing asparagus, many families have risen out of poverty and stabilized their lives.

Green agriculture and the desire to go further

In addition to production, he also links product consumption through Tuan Tu General Service Cooperative - where he holds the role of director. Currently, the cooperative develops more than 35 hectares of asparagus, with an output of 95 tons/year and a revenue of more than 4 billion VND/year. Fresh asparagus and asparagus tea products are recognized as meeting 3-star OCOP standards, consumed at supermarkets and clean agricultural product stores in the province.

In addition, his family also combines purchasing, processing bird's nests, and raising breeding cows, expanding revenue sources, bringing in an average profit of about 2.6 billion VND/year. His agricultural production model creates stable jobs for 28 local workers, mainly Cham women, with an income of 7 to 8.5 million VND/person/month, contributing to improving the lives and sustainable poverty reduction for farmers.

Mr. NGO CHI THIEN - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Phuoc Dinh Commune: Mr. Hung Ky not only enriched his family but also helped the villagers follow suit, turning the white sand area into a green, fertile place. He is a typical example of the Cham people in the patriotic emulation movement, demonstrating the spirit of overcoming difficulties, solidarity and aspiration to rise up.

In the trend of developing modern, environmentally friendly agriculture, Mr. Hung Ky and the cooperative pay special attention to environmental protection and green agricultural production, with a drip irrigation system that saves 40% of water and fertilizer, using organic microbial fertilizers to gradually replace chemical fertilizers, applying production management software and tracing product origin using QR codes.

Thanks to his daring spirit, Mr. Hung Ky was honored as a “Provincial-level good farmer and businessman”, a typical example in the movement “Joining hands to build new rural areas” and “Studying and following Ho Chi Minh’s ideology, morality and style”. He is often invited to be a reporter to share start-up experiences with local youth.

Mr. Hung Ky's story is not only a legitimate journey to get rich, but also a testament to his patriotic emulation spirit during the renovation period, when he knew how to turn difficulties into opportunities, and turn the sun and wind into a source of energy for his aspirations to rise up.
