Woman saved from flood thanks to iPhone

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên01/09/2023

While hiking with her dog in Mary Jane Canyon, east of Arches National Park, she noticed the floodwaters coming and tried to move to higher ground. GCSAR said the woman reached the sandbar above the creek, but rising water eroded the sand, causing both her and her dog to fall into the floodwaters. She then sent a satellite SOS alert on her iPhone, a feature that helps users contact emergency services in areas without cell service. It can be triggered manually or automatically with crash detection and fall detection.

However, her phone reported an error message sending. Thinking that the SOS message could not be transmitted, she started walking down the canyon with her dog.

However, the police received her request for help about eight minutes after the phone reported that the text message could not be sent. Although they did not receive detailed information about the woman's situation, the police did have her GPS coordinates at the time the message was sent.

Rescuers quickly sent people into the canyon and mobilized a helicopter to search for the victims. Eventually, the rescue team rescued the woman and dog, who were covered from head to toe in mud, and were found about 3.2 kilometers downstream from the initial coordinates.

GCSAR said hikers should study their planned route, the terrain, and the weather forecast. Police warned that rapidly forming thunderstorms could flood the canyons from a distance. Apple’s Emergency SOS feature has previously helped tourists who got lost in the mountains.
