As reported by Ha Tinh Newspaper , at 9:00 a.m. on September 21, the working group of the Economic, Corruption, Smuggling and Environmental Police Department (Ha Tinh Provincial Police) presided over and coordinated with the Department of Rural Development and Quality Management (under the Department of Agriculture and Environment) to inspect and discover that the business household Quach Thi Tran Tuyet (house number 05, lane 121, Phan Chanh street, Tien Giang residential group, Thanh Sen ward) used a banned substance called "candy water" (chemical name 6-benzy laminopurine, abbreviated as 6-BAP) to produce 472 kg of bean sprouts for sale to the Ha Tinh market. The above bean sprouts were sold by Tuyet at Ha Tinh market, restaurants in Thanh Sen ward and neighboring areas.

Bean sprouts sold at Ms. Phan Thi Ly's stall have decreased significantly in recent days.

Immediately after the article was published, many readers expressed concern and worry about the quality of the bean sprouts they used.

Ms. Phan Thi Hue (TDP 6, Thanh Sen Ward) said: “I often use bean sprouts to prepare daily dishes, even eat them raw, so when I read the information that bean sprouts produced in the area used banned substances, I was very confused and worried about food hygiene and safety issues. In recent days, I have limited the use of this item.”

According to records at traditional markets in Ha Tinh, the consumption of bean sprouts in recent days has decreased by 50-80%. Many traders said that information about bean sprout production facilities using banned substances has made consumers apprehensive, and some people have even "turned their backs" on this product.

Consumers are "cautious" when buying bean sprouts and accompanying foods.

Ms. Phan Thi Ly - a trader at Ha Tinh market said: "In the past few days, people have been spreading information about a bean sprout production facility using banned substances, so the consumption of this product has decreased significantly, from 70-80%. If before, I sold an average of 6-8kg of bean sprouts per day, now I only import about 3kg but by the end of the day I still can't sell them all."

According to Ms. Ly, unsold bean sprouts have led to products such as vegetables and pickled vegetables that use bean sprouts to be "picky" with consumers. "The source of bean sprouts sold at Ha Tinh market is imported from many sources and many different production facilities, so the information that one facility violated has greatly affected other reputable facilities as well as our trading activities. I hope people will not "boycott" bean sprouts, but instead prioritize buying at reputable stalls to ensure quality" - Ms. Ly added.

Bean sprout sales at Ms. Tran Thi Xuan's stall decreased by 50-60%.

As one of the bean sprout wholesalers at Ha Tinh market, Ms. Tran Thi Xuan (Thanh Sen ward) said: “My family has been growing bean sprouts for decades, providing clean bean sprouts for retailers, schools, and restaurants in the central area of Ha Tinh. On average, my facility supplies the market with about 1.5 - 2 quintals of finished bean sprouts each day. However, in the past few days, consumption has decreased by about 50-60% when information appeared that another bean sprout production facility was using banned substances.”

According to records, bean sprouts are currently being sold wholesale for 12,000 - 13,000 VND/kg, retail for 15,000 - 17,000 VND/kg. Many retailers said that to ensure quality, consumers can prioritize buying at reputable stalls, in addition, there are many characteristics to easily identify clean, safe bean sprouts.

Many retailers hope that consumers will not "turn their backs" on bean sprouts, avoiding the situation of "one bad apple spoiling the barrel".

“People should not be “cheap” and choose bean sprouts that are sold for only 7,000 - 8,000 VND/kg, or have eye-catching characteristics such as: few roots, plump, bright white color. Bean sprouts produced according to the correct process often have many roots, thin stems, less uniform color, when eaten, they have a sweet, crunchy, cool taste” - Ms. Hoang Thi Dung, a vegetable vendor at Vuon Uom market (Thanh Sen ward) said.

In fact, the anxiety and panic of people when a food item is found to contain banned substances is understandable, because this directly affects health. However, to avoid the situation of "one bad apple spoiling the barrel" affecting the business and trading activities of many small traders and other production facilities in the area, people should prioritize buying bean sprouts in particular and foods in general at reputable addresses, providing full documents to ensure food hygiene and safety conditions. In addition, when detecting activities of producing counterfeit or poor quality goods, it is possible to coordinate with local authorities and functional forces to inspect and promptly handle violations according to the provisions of law.
