BAC NINH - Bean sprouts are a familiar food in many families' meals, but consumption is currently very slow. The reason stems from the fact that recently, authorities discovered and handled a number of bean sprout production facilities using banned substances, not ensuring food hygiene and safety.

Bean sprouts are refreshing, cooling and good for health, but nowadays, many consumers have proactively removed this food from their daily menu. Ms. Tong Thi Tam (Da Mai ward) said: "Before, when the weather was hot, I often made bean sprout salad to add flavor to family meals. But now I am very afraid of buying unclean bean sprouts."

Not only in households, restaurants, noodle shops, pho shops also limit the use of bean sprouts. Many establishments have completely abandoned this product or if they do, customers do not choose it as much as before.

The most obvious impact of the restriction on bean sprouts is in traditional markets. Ms. Hoang Oanh, a trader at Cau Chui market, Bac Giang ward, complained: “I used to sell 15-20 kg per day, now I only sell a few kg. Many days I have to sell at a loss to avoid having to throw it away.”

Similar situations also occurred at Thuong market, Ha Vi market, Voi market... Some traders have stopped importing bean sprouts for a long time due to concerns about quality.

Bean sprouts used to be a hot commodity, many people got rich by producing and wholesaling bean sprouts. But the recent violations have severely affected the market, causing even reputable production facilities to suffer losses. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hien, My Thai commune, shared that in the past, every full moon and first day of the lunar month, she would make 1-2 boxes of bean sprouts and sell them within half an hour. But for the past few months, she has not produced them anymore because she could not sell them even though the bean sprouts were made using traditional, handmade methods, ensuring safety. Therefore, she only makes them when asked or ordered by someone.

In the context of consumers' increasingly demanding food hygiene and safety, clean, transparent production and maintaining reputation are the only ways to rebuild consumer trust. Once trust is lost, it will be very difficult to restore.

In the first 6 months of 2025, the authorities in the province discovered many cases of production and trading of goods that did not ensure food safety and hygiene. Notably, some establishments were handled for producing dozens of tons of bean sprouts using toxic chemicals, affecting the health of consumers.

Faced with the above situation, people hope that the authorities will continue to strengthen the inspection and supervision of food production and trading activities in the area. Strictly handling violations will contribute to protecting consumers' rights and ensuring the healthy and sustainable development of the food market.
