On September 30, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued Decision No. 3479/QD-BVHTTDL on sending the film Red Rain directed by Dang Thai Huyen, produced by People's Army Cinema, participating in the preliminary round of the International Feature Film Award (Best International Film) at the 98th Academy Awards, 2026.
The Oscars are organized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. This is a special event, affirming the integration efforts of Vietnamese cinema on the world's largest film stage.
Red Rain blends epic and modern, touching emotions
Previously, on June 13, the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism established a National Council for selecting films to participate in the Oscar preliminary round for the 2025-2026 term. The Council consists of 5 members who are prestigious managers, artists, directors, producers, and screenwriters. The Chairman of the Council is Mr. Dang Tran Cuong - Director of the Department. Department of Cinema.

Pursuant to Rule 16 of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the board met, discussed, and voted. As a result, the film Red Rain has been highly trusted, becoming Vietnam's representative to attend the Oscar preliminary round.
Comments from the Cinema Department are as follows: " Red Rain Set in the revolutionary war, the film realistically and movingly recreates the tragic history of the nation, honoring the bravery and sacrifice of soldiers. The film impresses with its humanistic storytelling, carefully invested images, emotional music, and convincing acting from the cast.
Director Dang Thai Huyen, who has been involved in war-themed films for many years, has skillfully harmonized the epic spirit with a close, modern perspective, making the work not only touch the hearts of domestic audiences but also have the ability to connect with international audiences."
According to the decision of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the People's Army Cinema will coordinate with the Cinema Department to complete the documents and send the films with English subtitles to the Oscar Organizing Committee before the prescribed deadline.
Over the past 30 years, many Vietnamese films have been submitted to the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars, such as The smell of green papaya (1993), Ha Dong silk shirt (2006), I see yellow flowers on green grass (2016), Hai Phuong (2019)...
According to the Department of Cinema and Film Red Rain continues this journey with new expectations not only to contribute to promoting the image of the country, people and history of Vietnam, but also to raise the position of Vietnamese cinema on the world cinema map.
