Hospitalized for swallowing 40 pieces of chewing gum

A 5-year-old boy in Ohio, USA was taken to the hospital after swallowing a pack of chewing gum. The incident caused the boy to have a stomachache and diarrhea for the next day. The cause was determined by doctors to be a foreign object blocking the digestive tract, according to Insider .

After being admitted to the hospital, the child’s abdomen was still distended. Doctors had to insert an endoscope to remove the gum from the boy’s abdomen. Explaining further, Dr. Elizabeth Rajan - a gastroenterologist at the Mayo Clinic health care system, said that our bodies cannot digest chewing gum, so it will pass through the digestive system intact and be excreted.

Doctors also denied the information that chewing gum residue can survive in the human body for up to 7 years.

"Once swallowed, chewing gum will be excreted in the stool within 40 hours," said Dr. Rajan.

However, experts also warn people not to swallow chewing gum, especially in large quantities, because it can affect digestive function, cause stomach pain or blockage of the digestive tract. In this case, patients should go to the hospital soon for early treatment.
