Kim Jong-un accuses the US, determined to develop nuclear forces

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un accused the United States of being behind international disputes, while reaffirming Pyongyang's policy of developing nuclear forces.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on February 9 that Mr. Kim Jong-un gave a speech during a visit to the North Korean Ministry of National Defense on February 8, on the occasion of the 77th anniversary of the founding of the country's armed forces.

In his speech, Mr. Kim mentioned a series of new plans to “strengthen all deterrence measures” and reaffirmed North Korea's unwavering policy of developing even stronger nuclear forces.

The North Korean leader said that the deployment of US strategic nuclear assets on the Korean Peninsula, and the nuclear war simulation exercises between the US, Japan and South Korea, are causing a " military imbalance" on the peninsula and the Northeast Asian region, creating a "new conflict structure" and posing a serious challenge to North Korea.

Kim added that Pyongyang does not want unnecessary tension in the region, but will take continuous countermeasures to ensure military balance, prevent the risk of a new war and ensure peace and security on the peninsula. He accused the US of being behind major and minor disputes in the world, saying that this proves that pursuing the path of unlimited defense capability building is the most justifiable.

On February 8, North Korea issued a statement affirming that nuclear weapons are built for combat purposes and against opponents, not as a diplomatic bargaining chip. Pyongyang's statement was made after Washington said it would seek a solution for the complete denuclearization of North Korea, according to Yonhap.
