Mr. Putin congratulated the President of Belarus on his re-election.

(Dan Tri) - In his congratulatory message to Mr. Lukashenko, President Putin also expressed optimism about the future of bilateral relations between Russia and Belarus.

Russian leader Vladimir Putin on January 27 sent congratulations to Mr. Alexander Lukashenko when he was re-elected President of Belarus.

In an official statement shared by the Kremlin, the Russian president praised Lukashenko's "convincing victory", which Putin said reflected Belarus' political authority and public support for its current course.

"His convincing victory in the elections clearly demonstrated his high political authority and undeniable public support for the country's course," the statement quoted Mr. Putin as saying.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko won a seventh term in office in an election on January 26, extending his rule by five years after three decades at the helm of the former Soviet bloc nation.

Mr Lukashenko won 86.82% of the vote, according to the head of the Central Election Commission, Igor Karpenko, quoted by state broadcaster Belta. No other candidate won more than 5%. The result means Mr Lukashenko will remain in power until 2030.

In his congratulatory message, President Putin also expressed optimism about the future of bilateral relations between the two countries.

"Recently, we have achieved a lot in strengthening the friendly relations between Moscow and Minsk. Of course, we will continue to cooperate closely to further develop this multilateral cooperation," Mr. Putin said.

The Kremlin's message also stressed the importance of the Union State, a type of political and economic partnership between Russia and Belarus, as well as broader integration within the Eurasian Economic Union.

Mr Lukashenko has been in power in Belarus since 1994 and is one of Europe's longest-serving leaders.

Mr Lukashenko’s re-election opens a new chapter in the close relationship between the two countries, a partnership that has become more important during the conflict in Ukraine as Belarus serves as a strategic ally and logistical hub for Russian operations.
