Trump gets good news in Georgia case

Fulton County Judge Scott McAfee of Georgia dismissed two charges against Trump and one against the former president’s allies in the case on September 12, according to Reuters. The judge said prosecutors did not have the authority to bring the charges, which involved submitting false documents to federal court.

Mr. McAfee allowed the remainder of the case, in which Mr. Trump still faces eight charges, to proceed. The former president and 14 other defendants have pleaded not guilty to fraud and other charges. Prosecutors say the defendants were involved in an effort to overturn Mr. Trump’s narrow loss in the 2020 Georgia election.

The case has been on hold since June while a state appeals court considered removing prosecutor Fani Willis from her role because of a sexual relationship with a deputy who is no longer involved in the case.

The arguments will go to the appeals court in December, meaning Mr Trump's case will not be heard before the November 5 election.

Mr Trump was indicted in a separate federal case over a failed 2020 reversal attempt, but that case is also on hold following a US Supreme Court ruling that presidents have immunity from prosecution for official acts.

With Judge McAfee’s ruling on September 12, a total of five of the 13 charges against Mr. Trump in Georgia were dismissed. Mr. Trump’s lawyer Steve Sadow said the ruling showed the former president and his defense team had won again. Prosecutors did not immediately comment.
