Today, June 14, at Tan Thanh Primary and Secondary School, Huong Hoa District, Quang Tri Province, the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs in coordination with the Department of Education and Training, the Safe Swimming Project (Swim For Life) organized a launching ceremony for child drowning prevention and kick-off the Child Drowning Prevention Project in Huong Hoa District in 2024.

According to statistics from the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, from 2015 to now, the whole province has had 134 children die due to drowning accidents. In 2023 and the first 4 months of 2024 alone, drowning has caused 14 children to die.

There are many reasons for these tragic drowning accidents. The main reason is that children are not equipped with adequate knowledge and skills in swimming and drowning prevention.

Faced with the above situation, the cooperation of the whole community in preventing and fighting drowning for children is extremely necessary. Realizing that, recently, relevant levels, sectors and units have actively participated in and contributed to preventing and fighting drowning for children. Many programs and projects, including the Safe Swimming Project, have been mobilized to be established and implemented with practical activities such as: organizing professional training for swimming instructors; educating children on water safety skills; teaching free swimming lessons...

At the launching ceremony, the leaders of the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs called on all levels, sectors and relevant units to focus on implementing solutions to prevent and combat drowning. In particular, the important thing is to strengthen propaganda for schools, households, parents and caregivers to care for and monitor their children and educate children about the risks of drowning accidents.

Relevant levels, sectors and units need to actively participate in organizing classes to popularize safe swimming for children; instruct safe swimming skills; actively mobilize funding sources to sponsor drowning prevention activities in the locality...

It is extremely necessary to review, repair, and install warning signs at places where drowning accidents often occur or are at risk of occurring; to promote the use of life jackets and swimming buoys for children; to inform and warn about places where drowning accidents are likely to occur... In particular, relevant levels, sectors, and units need to replicate typical models in preventing and combating drowning in children.

During the program, delegates and students were informed about the current situation and efforts to prevent and combat drowning in children in Quang Tri; listened to children's thoughts and aspirations; watched a video introducing the Safe Swimming Project...

On this occasion, the Department of Education and Training announced the decision to complete the Steering Committee of the Project on Child Drowning Prevention in Quang Tri Province. The program's organizing committee also launched the Project on Child Drowning Prevention in Huong Hoa District and presented 20 gift scholarships to disadvantaged students in Tan Thanh Commune.
