On September 10, Mr. Doan Van Danh, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ben Tre province, said that the province aims to develop about 79,000 hectares by 2025, of which 20,000 hectares are for organic production; about 2,000 hectares are granted growing area codes. By 2030, the coconut area will be stably developed to about 80,000 hectares, 25,000 hectares of organic coconut, and about 6,000 hectares of coconut area granted growing area codes, to ensure raw material areas for processing and export.

According to Mr. Danh, the demand for coconut products is increasing, such as: coconut candy, coconut oil, coconut fiber, activated carbon are exported with increasing volume and value.

To ensure raw material areas for production and processing, the provincial agricultural sector will develop organic coconut garden areas based on sustainable value chain linkages; ensure traceability; issue growing area codes and packaging facility codes according to market requirements.

"In the immediate future, the agricultural sector will focus on assessing and assigning codes to fresh coconut growing areas that need to be exported to foreign markets through official channels, in which Ben Tre's fresh coconuts meet the requirements stated in the Protocol on phytosanitary requirements for fresh Vietnamese coconuts exported to China," said Mr. Danh.

Currently, the whole province has 133 basic growing areas that meet production conditions according to current regulations, registered for codes for fresh coconut growing areas for export with an area of ​​nearly 8,400 hectares and over 12,800 participating households.

Tra Vinh wax coconut brings high economic value, helping farmers escape poverty

In Tra Vinh, in addition to drinking coconut, wax coconut is considered a specialty crop of the province, bringing high economic value.

According to estimates, while regular coconuts sometimes drop to 3,000 VND/fruit, grade 1 wax coconuts always fluctuate at 100,000 VND/fruit, selling well. Currently, the whole province has 1,277 hectares of wax coconuts, most concentrated in Cau Ke district and scattered in Tra Cu, Cang Long, and Tieu Can.

According to Vice Chairman of Tra Vinh Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Trung Hoang, in the strategy to upgrade the coconut value chain in the period of 2022 - 2025, the province will develop about 550 hectares of specialty wax coconut; at the same time, orient to build the Tra Vinh wax coconut brand, in which applying advanced seed technology, especially embryo-cultured and tissue-cultured coconut varieties with high wax ratio, to improve productivity and product quality.

In particular, expanding the area of ​​wax coconut cultivation to create a rich source of raw materials, enough to supply many domestic and international markets.
