OCOP products in U Minh Thuong

In recent times, U Minh Thuong commune has focused on developing OCOP products (One Commune One Product Program), gradually building key and typical agricultural products to increase economic value, production efficiency, increase income, and improve the lives of local people.

According to the People's Committee of U Minh Thuong commune, products participating in the OCOP program, especially local specialty products, are based on strengths and advantages in natural conditions and local materials.

Developing local strengths

With the desire to make the most of locally available raw materials, create jobs, and increase income for people, over the past 12 years, Trung Kien fish cake and lemongrass-turmeric salted fish cake production facility has affirmed its position in the market. Every month, the facility produces hundreds of kilograms of fish cake according to customer orders; 2 products were recognized as 3-star OCOP in 2022. Notably, most of the production materials are purchased from people in the U Minh Thuong buffer zone. "We consider quality and food safety as the top criteria. Quality products and reasonable prices attract customers. Since the product was recognized as 3-star OCOP, customers have trusted and supported it quite a lot," said Mr. Vo Van Canh, owner of Trung Kien facility.

U Minh Thuong has cajuput forests, creating famous delicious and nutritious wild honey products. Honey is also a typical product of U Minh Thuong, recognized as a collective brand. Taking advantage of local resources, over the years, U Minh Thuong honey products of Le Tien facility have been expanded in the market. According to Mr. Le Van Tien, the owner of the facility, most people have a need to use honey, but are confused by too many products for sale. Therefore, he built the U Minh Thuong Le Tien honey brand to maintain and preserve natural honey resources in the locality. "The product meeting the 3-star OCOP standard has made it easier for me to promote the product widely throughout the provinces. Through coordinating the introduction and sale of products at conferences, events organizing exhibitions, introducing products... many customers know about it, and the consumption output is higher. Being recognized as OCOP opens up opportunities to find markets and increase income for people," said Mr. Tien.

Proud that the COCO An Nhien pineapple coconut product with ring lid achieved 3-star OCOP in 2025, Ms. Phan Kim Cuong, owner of COCO An Nhien business shared: "Over the past time, we have constantly improved and enhanced the quality. This is an important milestone in the journey to affirm the brand, continue to promote U Minh Thuong's typical products to markets outside the province."

According to Ms. Phan Kim Cuong, realizing that the local soil conditions are favorable for pineapple coconut trees to grow, her family cultivated 5 hectares. At first, the family only sold fresh coconuts. But seeing that the product value was low, she researched and learned many methods and techniques to create more valuable products, including the COCO An Nhien ring-lid coconut product. “After being harvested in the garden, the pineapple coconuts will be cleaned, shaved, cleaned and treated with laser to engrave rings and attach the cap to the shell. There are 2 circles created, one is to insert the straw, the other is to get the coconut meat inside,” Ms. Kim Cuong shared.

Accompanying authorities

To successfully implement the OCOP program, along with the initiative of production entities, it is necessary to have the accompaniment and support of local authorities in inspecting, supervising and supporting the entities. Up to now, U Minh Thuong commune has 7 OCOP products. Based on the guidance, the People's Committee of the commune propagates to raise awareness among people and production entities about the OCOP program, reviews potential products, and guides entities to register to participate. In addition, the locality coordinates with sectors and units to support entities in completing ideas, registered products, and building business plans; monitoring progress and capturing information about the implementation process of entities.

In general, U Minh Thuong's OCOP products have actively contributed to connecting supply and demand, enhancing product value, thereby enhancing brand value, creating jobs, increasing income for people, and promoting local economic development. The ranked products have made progress in quality, diversified designs, packaging, ensuring conditions, and product traceability...

According to the leaders of the People's Committee of the commune, in the coming time, the commune will continue to promote propaganda work, raise people's awareness of the OCOP program; organize reviews and identify products originating from local specialties or domesticated to build a brand of OCOP products of U Minh Thuong region.
