Free surgery for children with birth defects

E Hospital has just coordinated with the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Medicine and Pharmacy and Operation Smile to organize a program of free examination, treatment and surgery for children with congenital defects.

In this program, doctors perform surgery for children with congenital cleft lip and palate defects who have not had surgery. Children with cleft lip must be at least 6 months old and weigh 8 kg or more; children with cleft palate must be at least 12 months old and weigh 10 - 12 kg or more;

Congenital cleft lip and palate defects of all ages (lip scars, palatal holes, nasal defects, dental clefts); patients with extra fingers (hands, feet); patients with congenital ptosis (not an ophthalmological disease) over 5 years old...

In addition, some children with other movement-related disabilities are also examined and indicated for surgery such as Achilles contracture in patients with cerebral palsy, Achilles tendon strain, atrophy of limbs, paralysis of limbs...

Dr. Nguyen Hong Nhung - Department of Dentistry - Hospital E; lecturer of Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery - University of Medicine and Pharmacy - Vietnam National University, Hanoi examined and advised on surgery for the two children.

Baby Truong Anh Duc had a congenital cleft lip and palate defect and had undergone two surgeries; the youngest baby Truong Anh Tai had a more severe congenital cleft lip and palate defect and had undergone six surgeries to be completely healed as he is now. After the screening examination, the doctors of the Department of Dentistry, E Hospital decided to treat him, performing bone graft surgery to cover the defect for baby Anh Tai and removing the screws for baby Anh Duc.

According to Dr. Le Quynh Quyen, through physical and intellectual games, the child's ability to understand and recognize toys will be assessed. After the child has undergone cleft lip and palate surgery, the doctor will transfer the child to the Mental Health Department for continued treatment so that the child will have the opportunity to go to school in the near future.

Professor Trinh Dinh Hai, Head of the Department of Dentistry, said that this is the largest program ever with the participation of all teachers of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the support of volunteers who are residents and graduate students of the Department of Dentistry, University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

It is known that during the 35 years of establishment and development of Operation Smile, hundreds of thousands of children across the country have received free surgery, bringing a new life full of energy and confidence to children born with disadvantages due to facial defects.

According to the agreement between Operation Smile and the Faculty of Dentistry (University of Medicine and Pharmacy) and E Hospital, each year there will be 4 to 5 free surgery programs for children implemented at E Hospital and there will be 3 to 4 groups going to perform examinations and surgeries in provinces and cities.

That shows the companionship of relevant organizations and units, especially with doctors and teachers with good expertise to bring meaningful programs to society.
