On the morning of October 13, four climbers including Tran Trung Kien (student of Le Hong Phong High School, Phu Yen ), Nguyen Quoc Nhat Minh (student of Hung Vuong High School for the Gifted, Gia Lai), Vo Quang Phu Duc (student of Quoc Hoc High School for the Gifted, Thua Thien Hue), and Nguyen Nguyen Phu (student of Hanoi National University of Education High School for the Gifted) entered the fierce competition at the final round of the 24th Road to Olympia.

Phu Duc won the Road to Olympia 2024, received a gold-plated laurel wreath and 50,000 USD

In addition to the prestigious 18K gold-plated laurel wreath, the champion of the 24th Road to Olympia received a prize worth 50,000 USD and the opportunity to study abroad. The second and third place contestants received prizes worth 200 and 100 million VND, respectively.

This is the third time the Road to Olympia championship has returned to Hue, in 2009, 2016 and 2024.

After the Organizing Committee announced the champion, many teachers and audiences shared the joy with the 24th champion of Olympia Phu Duc.

Sharing with the press, Phu Duc expressed his joy and happiness. Phu Duc said he was proud to be the third person from Hue National School to win the laurel wreath. At the same time, he helped the school break the record of having 3 students - the most in the country to win the laurel wreath.

Duc said that throughout the final program, everything was fine and he kept his mind stable.

Answering the question about the secret to winning the championship, Phu Duc said it was "toughness and intelligence". Intelligence, according to Duc, is shown in the decisive moment of the championship. Answering the question about the most stressful moment, Duc clearly stated that it was the moment when Nguyen Phu was 20 points behind him. This was a "situation" he had encountered in the third quarter, so this was the "bell ringing" strategy to help him win.

The thrilling 'mountain climb'

The final round of the Road to Olympia 2024 began with the first round of the Warm-up. Each contestant will have the first 6 questions. Before entering the round, all 4 contestants shared their determination to bring a vibrant atmosphere, determination, and resilient spirit.

In the first round, Nguyen Phu was the first to answer 6 questions and got 40 points. The next person to join the contest was Nhat Minh who got 20 points.

The contestant who participated in the third warm-up round, Phu Duc, won the maximum 60 points in this round. As the last contestant to participate in the warm-up round, Trung Kien won 40 points.

After the second round, the candidates' scores changed, specifically, Nguyen Phu 45 points, Nhat Minh 15 points, Phu Duc 75 points, and Trung Kien 50 points.

Thus, after the warm-up round, Phu Duc temporarily took the lead with 75 points.

The contestants continued with the Obstacle Course , the program gave a challenge with 7 letters.

As the first participant to answer, Nguyen Phu chose the second row, but Phu Duc was the one who pressed the bell to answer without any hints.

Phu Duc was the best when he gave the answer "Net-Zero" and explained that Net-Zero is a common effort of our country as well as the world towards zero emissions by 2050.

Through this answer, Phu Duc got 80 more points, bringing his total to 155 points, temporarily leading.

The contestants continued with the Acceleration round. In the first question, all 4 gave the answer "4 on the spot", in which Phu Duc and Trung Kien had to use handwritten boards due to mechanical problems.

Everyone won points: Nhat Minh was the fastest, with 40 points; Nguyen Phu 30, Phu Duc 20 and Trung Kien 10.

In the second question, the candidates were asked to arrange the pictures with the year of the historical event. Phu Duc answered the fastest and received an additional 40 points.

In the third question, the candidates were asked to find the key word in a code consisting of many letters and symbols. There were 2 candidates who gave the answer at the last seconds but the answer was incorrect. Because the correct answer was "fulcrum". No candidate got any points.

In the fourth question related to artificial intelligence (AI), all four candidates won points. Among them, Phu Duc was the fastest to win 40 points.

After this round, Nhat Minh has 85 points, Nguyen Phu has 105 points, Trung Kien has 120 points and Phu Duc is temporarily leading with 235 points.

Entering the Finish Line round, the final round, Phu Duc - the temporary leader was the first contestant to step up and choose a question package. Duc thanked Ngo Mon Square for cheering him on. Duc chose the 60-point question package.

In the first question, Duc correctly answered the names of Vietnam's four Gepard missile ships: Dinh Tien Hoang, Ly Thai To, Quang Trung, Tran Hung Dao and won 20 points. In the second question, Duc answered incorrectly.

In the third question, Duc did not choose the star of hope and continued to answer incorrectly about the name of a tree in the poem by poet Tran Dang Khoa in Truong Sa. Nguyen Phu rang the bell and answered correctly about the "storm tree" and won 20 points. At the end of this round, Phu Duc had 235 points.

Entering the final round, Nguyen Phu thanked his family, teachers and friends. He said that if he could not win today, the next generations would do better and win.

Nguyen Phu chose the 20 - 30 - 20 point question package. In the first question, Phu correctly answered about the resource "Lithium" for 20 points. This is an important resource in the battery manufacturing industry for electric vehicles.

In the second question, Phu answered wrongly, missed the chance to score points and was deducted 15 points.

In the last question, Phu chose the star of hope and when MC Khanh Vy shouted "The Pedagogical University is proud of you", the male contestant got an additional 40 points, with the correct answer about "superconductivity phenomenon". At the end of this round, Nguyen Phu had a total of 185 points.

As the third contestant to enter the final round, Trung Kien expressed his sincere thanks to the fans in Phu Yen who cheered him on enthusiastically.

Kien chose the 30-20-30 question package. In the first question about the history of the first airport built in Tuyen Quang, Kien correctly answered "Lung Co airport" and excellently won 30 points.

In the second answer, when Trung Kien was confident in his answer "sulfur", MC Khanh Vy shouted "excellent Trung Kien" and he got 20 more points.

In the third question in English, Kien chose the star of hope. However, Kien answered incorrectly.

Nguyen Phu then quickly rang the bell to correctly answer the question about "IUU fishing" - illegal fishing and won 30 points.

From there, the total score Phu got was 215 points. The atmosphere in the studio was very exciting, when Nguyen Phu was 20 points ahead of Phu Duc - the contestant temporarily leading. At the end of this round, Trung Kien had a score of 125 points.

Nhat Minh was the last contestant to finish. Before entering the competition, Nhat Minh was said to be given a shirt from Manchester United football club.

Minh chose the 20 - 20 - 30 point question package. In the first question about the poems written by Tran Huy Lieu praising the hero, Minh answered incorrectly.

Then, Trung Kien quickly rang the bell and answered correctly about the character Pham Hong Thai, at the same time, adding 20 points.

In the second question, about the expected design speed of the North-South high-speed railway, Nhat Minh quickly answered correctly as 350km/h, winning 20 points.

With the last question, Nhat Minh continued not to choose the star of hope. However, Minh did not give an answer. Phu Duc pressed the bell to answer later but also gave an incorrect answer.

At the end of this round, Nhat Minh had 85 points. Although he gave the wrong answer and was deducted 15 points, Phu Duc still achieved 220 points and officially won the championship of Road to Olympia 2024.

Mr. Nguyen Phi Hung (Phu Duc's uncle) said that his family had him and Duc's older brother, Vo Quang Nhat, at the studio, while his parents watched the show in Thua Thien Hue. Mr. Hung shared that he felt very happy when Duc won the championship this year.

According to him, the moment he felt most worried was when Phu Duc and Nguyen Phu were only 20 points apart. "But everyone believed in his ability and Duc did it. I am very happy," Mr. Hung laughed loudly and expressed his thanks to the audience nationwide, teachers and friends who cheered and encouraged Duc.

At the end of the Road to Olympia 2024, Trung Kien and Nhat Minh won third place, and Nguyen Phu won second place. With a score of 220, Phu Duc excellently won the championship this year with a laurel wreath and a prize of 50,000 USD.
