Care for the elderly

Caring for and promoting the role of the elderly has always been one of the major policies of the Party and the State. Over the years, the Provincial Association of the Elderly has coordinated with agencies and units to implement many practical programs and activities, helping the elderly live happily and healthily, continuing to promote their role in all areas of social life.

The Elderly Association of Group 7, To Hieu Ward organized a birthday celebration for the elderly.

The whole province has over 127,700 members, of which more than 18,300 are under 60 years old, accounting for 14.3%. Taking care of the elderly, every year, the Association visits and gives gifts to meritorious people, poor elderly people, elderly people in difficult circumstances, lonely elderly people; organizes longevity celebrations; coordinates medical examination, consultation and free medicine distribution for elderly people in remote areas.

Mr. Lo Mai Kien, Chairman of the Provincial Elderly Association, said: Since the beginning of the year, the Association has coordinated with the Central Vietnam Elderly Association and other units to present 400 gifts; the association's grassroots organizations have mobilized and coordinated to present nearly 11,300 gifts, worth more than 6.3 billion VND; and organized longevity celebrations for 12,429 elderly people.

To date, the province has more than 107,700 elderly people granted health insurance cards, more than 23,600 elderly people receiving social benefits; over 54,000 elderly people have health records. The province's fund for caring for and promoting the role of elderly people has reached more than 24.6 billion VND. In addition, clans and families have also built a fund to support grandparents and parents of up to 56 billion VND.

Along with improving material life, the Association at all levels focuses on taking care of the spiritual life of the elderly. The whole province has established over 900 cultural, artistic, physical education and sports clubs, with more than 42,800 elderly people participating in activities. Every year, the Provincial Association of the Elderly also coordinates to organize art and sports competitions, creating useful playgrounds, contributing to improving the quality of life and realizing the goal of "Living happily, living healthily, living happily".

Children and grandchildren congratulate the elderly on their longevity celebration in the new year 2025.

In particular, the intergenerational self-help club model has clearly demonstrated its effectiveness, with 132 clubs and nearly 7,300 members maintaining regular activities; the clubs are managing a capital of 3.7 billion VND, lending to 597 members to improve their material and spiritual lives.

Typically, the intergenerational self-help club in Cao Da 1 village, Bac Yen commune, was established in 2018 with 100 members, of which 70% are elderly. Ms. Dinh Thi Thanh, Club Director, shared: The club has supported 4-6 million VND in capital for 6 members to develop production; established 5 volunteer groups to regularly care for and help elderly people in difficult circumstances. At the same time, it maintains cultural and sports activities to improve the spiritual life of members.

Patriotic emulation movements were launched by the Provincial Elderly Association and widely implemented in the association organization system. The focus is the emulation movement "Old age - Bright example", with many practical activities, such as: Elderly people participating in socio -economic development, border protection, environmental protection, new rural construction, mobilizing families, clans and villages to well implement the movement "All people unite to build new rural areas, civilized urban areas"...

October every year is chosen as the Action Month for the Elderly in Vietnam. Implementing the theme of 2025 "Promoting the role of the elderly in the era of national development", the Provincial Elderly Association coordinated with the Red Cross and the Provincial Traditional Medicine Hospital to organize free medical examinations and medicine distribution for 200 elderly people in To Hieu ward, Muong Bang commune; giving gifts to policy families and elderly people in difficult circumstances. Many cultural, artistic, health care, folk dance and sports exchange activities were organized enthusiastically, attracting a large number of elderly people to participate, notably the volleyball and folk dance movements.

Phieng Pan Border Guard Station coordinated with volunteer units to examine and give free medicine to the elderly in Phieng Khang village, Phieng Pan commune.

As one of the 100 elderly people who received free medical examinations and medicine, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thai, 88 years old, group 3 Chieng Le, To Hieu ward, shared: I used to be a former youth volunteer, participating in the opening of National Highway 6. Now I am old, often have knee pain, and have difficulty walking. I am very grateful to the doctors who examined me and gave me free medicine. Every year, the Ward Health Station also creates a health record for me and gives me gifts on holidays and Tet.

On September 9, 2025, the Politburo issued Resolution No. 72-NQ/TW on a number of breakthrough solutions to strengthen the protection, care and improvement of people's health. According to the Resolution, each province and centrally-run city must have at least one specialized hospital; build a geriatric hospital or a general hospital with a geriatric department; and at the same time, perfect the rehabilitation service system, ensuring close and effective coordination between medical facilities and elderly care facilities. In addition, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly coordinated with the Ministry of Health and the Military Commercial Joint Stock Bank (MB) to organize the launching ceremony of the Action Month for the Elderly in 2025, and at the same time deploy the humanitarian program "Bright eyes for the elderly" for the period 2025-2028. These are extremely meaningful and humane policies and guidelines for the elderly nationwide, including Son La. On that basis, the Provincial Elderly Association will coordinate with the Department of Health to advise the Provincial People's Committee to issue a specific plan to implement the Resolution practically and effectively.

With the attention and care of all levels, sectors and society, the lives of the elderly in the province are increasingly improved; helping them live happily and healthily, becoming shining examples in implementing local emulation movements for their children and grandchildren to learn and follow.
