The Cambodian National Assembly officially approved Mr. Hun Manet as the new Prime Minister.

MP Heng Samrin chaired the voting session on the morning of August 22 and Mr. Hun Manet won the support of most of the 125 MPs to become the new Prime Minister of Cambodia, according to Reuters.

Speaking after the vote, Mr Hun Manet said "today is a historic day for Cambodia".

The Cambodian People's Party (CPP) of Hun Manet, son of Hun Sen, won 120 of the 125 seats in the National Assembly in the July election. A few days later, Prime Minister Hun Sen announced that he would step down as prime minister.

King Norodom Sihamoni chaired the opening session of the first session of the 7th National Assembly on August 21. At the session, King Norodom Sihamoni said he had full confidence that the new government of Mr. Hun Manet would lead the country to a prosperous future.

Mr. Manet (46 years old) graduated from the famous West Point Military Academy in the US, has a PhD in economics from Bristol University (UK) and is currently Deputy Commander-in-Chief and Army Commander, Royal Cambodian Army.

As for Mr. Hun Sen, the leader previously said that he would continue as President of the CPP. He added that he would be appointed as President of the Supreme Privy Council serving the King of Cambodia, and concurrently serve as President of the Senate to replace Mr. Say Chhum after the Senate election in February 2024.
