Before the merger, Rach Gia City was recognized by the Prime Minister as a Class I urban area under Kien Giang province. At the announcement ceremony in March 2025, Deputy Minister of Construction Nguyen Tuong Van gave a comprehensive and in-depth overview of the development of Rach Gia urban area. “From a small, damp and swampy land, Rach Gia has grown strongly to become a modern, dynamic urban area of regional stature. Rach Gia is constantly developing, expanding the urban area, gradually modernizing the infrastructure, becoming one of the most dynamically developing urban areas in the Southwest region,” Deputy Minister Nguyen Tuong Van commented.

Living on Tran Quang Khai Street, Rach Gia Ward, every morning, People's Armed Forces Hero Kieu Van Niet cycles and walks to exercise at Tran Quang Khai Park. "Rach Gia has developed remarkably, with convenient transportation and a spacious, modern appearance, contributing to promoting socio -economic development and improving the quality of people's lives," said Mr. Niet.

In recent years, in Rach Gia area, a series of infrastructure projects have been invested, including many urban beautification projects such as: Embankment to urgently handle landslides on the west bank of Ong Hien canal, embankment and Nguyen Thai Hoc street; expansion of Vo Truong Toan, Tran Van Giau, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai streets, 3/2 street extension through Rach Gia - Chau Thanh, Rach Gia - Hon Dat...

Along with that, the achievements of sea reclamation continue to be inherited and promoted. Up to now, the area of sea reclamation has reached about 688 hectares, many new urban areas have been formed such as the new urban area reclaiming the Northwest sea, Phu Cuong Hoang Gia urban area, Phu Quy urban area..., contributing to expanding the urban space, creating a spacious and modern appearance for Rach Gia.

Rach Gia's trade and service sector has developed strongly, creating conditions for expanding the trade system and diversifying service industries, especially food and beverage, entertainment, and recreation services... Tourism activities in Rach Gia have recovered after the COVID-19 pandemic and continue to develop, becoming a transit point connecting with key tourist areas of the province.

Speaking at the 1st Congress of the Rach Gia Ward Party Committee, term 2025 - 2030, Party Central Committee member, Provincial Party Secretary Nguyen Tien Hai assessed that in the past term, Rach Gia's economy continued to maintain stability and develop; the economic structure shifted positively, in the right direction. Rach Gia mobilized nearly 55,600 billion VND from resources to invest in infrastructure construction. Urban management work was focused on leadership and direction, implemented quite comprehensively; infrastructure was invested synchronously. Many urban areas, residential areas, and streets were invested in, renovated, and upgraded, contributing to creating an increasingly spacious appearance of the ward; the inner suburbs also had positive changes. Rach Gia met the standards of a class I urban area, gradually transforming into a bustling coastal city with its own unique features, attracting a large number of tourists.

After implementing the policy of administrative unit arrangement, Rach Gia ward continues to receive investment attention to expand urban space and develop socio-economic in a multi-dimensional direction; towards green growth urban, smart urban and climate change adaptation, initially forming a "dynamic urban triangle" including Phu Quoc - Ha Tien - Rach Gia, creating an important foundation for the ward to promote its central role, promote regional connectivity and sustainable development. At the same time, the Ha Tien - Rach Gia - Bac Lieu corridor has been identified as one of the four important economic corridors of the Mekong Delta according to the approved regional planning, opening up many opportunities in urban development, trade, services and regional connectivity.

Rach Gia is located in an area with many advantages for comprehensive, multi-sector, multi-sector economic development, playing the role of a connecting center of the West Coast region. The ward is oriented to be a political, administrative, comprehensive economic center, a trading hub and plays a core role in 5 key dynamic urban areas of An Giang.

According to the Standing Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Council of Rach Gia Ward Nguyen Thi Hoan Xuan, in the 2025 - 2030 term, Rach Gia will continue to invest in building traffic infrastructure connecting with neighboring localities, creating favorable conditions for trade and linking typical and strong industries and professions with Phu Quoc special zone, Ha Tien ward, Chau Doc ward, forming dynamic growth poles of the province, spreading to neighboring areas. The ward will continue to complete and adjust the general planning of administrative boundaries after the merger; synchronous traffic planning, connecting areas in the ward and with neighboring areas. In addition, Rach Gia will strengthen urban management, especially investing in and upgrading infrastructure, creating civilized and modern urban architecture and landscape.
