The Lantern Festival is an opportunity for Hoi An residents to demonstrate their community's cultural identity as well as preserve and pass on the unique cultural identity of the Vietnamese and Chinese communities. Community activities related to traditional rituals are mainly concentrated from the 12th to the 18th, with the main ceremony on the 16th of January.

Nguyen Tieu is also considered the day of “Thien Quan Tu Phuc” - the day when the heavenly officials bestow blessings on all living beings in the world. Therefore, many people from all over the region gather at pagodas, temples, Quan Cong temples, Phuc Kien, Trieu Chau, Quang Trieu assembly halls, etc. to ask for fortune-telling and good luck.
