After 14 sanctions packages, the EU continues to seek ways to make things difficult for Russia within the framework of the new mechanism.

On October 11, a senior spokesman for the European Union (EU) said that at a meeting scheduled for October 14 in Luxembourg, foreign ministers of EU member states will discuss new sanctions against Russia.

“There will be an exchange of opinions on sanctions. As you know, the new mechanism was adopted on October 8. We hope that member states will propose a sanctions list within the framework of the new mechanism,” the official revealed.

In addition, the spokesman added, the foreign ministers will also discuss efforts to combat the circumvention of these sanctions.

The EU Council has approved a new mechanism to counter Russia's “destabilizing actions” abroad.

Previously, at the end of July 2024, the EU extended all sanctions against Russia for another 6 months, until January 31, 2025. This decision includes sanctions from 2014 after Moscow annexed the Crimean peninsula and new measures imposed from 2022 when Russia conducted a special military operation in Ukraine.

To date, the EU has imposed a total of 14 sanctions on Russia, including restrictive measures in the trade, financial, technological, industrial, and transport sectors, as well as restrictions on imports of oil and petrochemical products from Russia, and restrictions on exports to this country of luxury goods and dual-use goods.

The 27-nation bloc also takes punitive measures against actions aimed at circumventing sanctions.

Moscow considers the sanctions illegal and unconstructive.

Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed that one of the conditions for resolving the situation in Ukraine is to lift all sanctions against Moscow.
