After 3 days of hand, foot and mouth disease, 17-month-old boy had to undergo dialysis

On the morning of June 8, Dr. Nguyen Minh Tien, Deputy Director of the City Children's Hospital (HCMC), said that after 2 days of treatment, the child's condition improved, fever reduced, heart rate reduced to 136-140 beats/minute, hemodynamics stable, and continued to be actively monitored and treated.

Medical history revealed that in the first 3 days the child had fever, nausea, vomiting, and red rash with blisters on the palms and feet. On the 3rd day, the child had a fever, was startled, had wide eyes and trembling limbs, so he was admitted to the local hospital. Here, the doctor diagnosed grade 3 hand, foot and mouth disease, and treated according to the treatment regimen. However, the condition did not improve, so he was transferred to the City Children's Hospital (HCMC).

After admission, the child showed signs of drowsiness, heart rate over 200 beats/minute, continuous high fever, diagnosed with grade 4 hand, foot and mouth disease. Tests showed high cardiac enzymes, slightly increased liver enzymes, severe metabolic acidosis,

The doctor performed endotracheal intubation to help with breathing, anti-shock with vasopressor fluids, immunomodulatory drugs, sedatives, and active antipyretics. However, the condition did not improve, so the team performed continuous blood filtration.

Dr. Tien said that the PCR test of the rectal swab showed that the child was infected with the EV7 strain of hand, foot and mouth disease. This is the strain of virus that caused many severe cases of hand, foot and mouth disease and deaths in 2011 and then in 2018.

Therefore, Dr. Tien noted that parents need to pay attention when they see their children showing signs of fever that is difficult to reduce, rash and blisters on the hands, feet, buttocks and knees, mouth ulcers... In daily life, it is necessary to pay attention to giving children clean food and drink, clean living conditions, keeping their hands and toys clean , and ensuring hygiene.
