Thailand strives to boost tourism during peak season

Deputy Prime Minister and Director General of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Thailand Thammanat Prompao said on September 26 that in the next four months, the Thai government will take proactive measures to attract at least 2 million Chinese tourists to Thailand, with ensuring safety being the top priority, along with strengthening Thailand-China relations.

Meanwhile, Atthakorn Sirilathayakorn, Minister of Tourism and Sports, revealed that he has set both short-term and long-term goals to boost the economy through tourism. The focus will be on restoring international tourist arrivals to near pre-COVID-19 levels in 2019, around 40 million, along with measures to stimulate domestic tourism.

“In the immediate future, over the next four months, we will focus on stimulating foreign tourism in Thailand, focusing on key target markets, or countries where tourist numbers are declining, including China, Japan, South Korea, India, Saudi Arabia and the Middle East. We will adopt a new approach: sending senior executives on trips to build trust. For example, we visited China with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Thammanat Prompao to discuss agriculture and tourism, to reassure tourists that Thailand is serious about ensuring their safety and convenience,” Mr Atthakorn said.

To stimulate domestic tourism , Mr. Atthakorn said he plans to restart successful projects, similar to the "Thailand Co-pay" or "We Travel Together" programs, which are still in effect until October 31, 2025.

“In the next four months, Thailand must accelerate the growth of international tourist arrivals, which is admittedly difficult, but we must focus on markets with potential and identify the causes of the decline,” Mr. Atthakorn said.

Mr. Atthakorn also stated that to ensure that the Ministry of Tourism and Sports can become a revenue-generating ministry for the Thai economy, the ministry will focus on both tourism and sports. Hosting the 33rd SEA Games, in particular, is an important opportunity to demonstrate Thailand's readiness on the international stage. The budget for the 33rd SEA Games is set at 2.055 trillion baht (US$63.86 billion), and there will be a request to increase the budget if necessary.
