During the survey trip, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Thap province Nguyen Duc Thinh requested local authorities to mobilize households whose houses were affected to evacuate from the landslide area to ensure the safety of people's lives and property...

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Thap province, at 22:20 on October 13, on the bank of Tien River in Tan Quoi hamlet, a landslide occurred in the area of Mr. Tran Van Ham's house (about 650m downstream from An Long ferry). The length of the landslide is about 30m, going into the mainland about 20m, affecting a kitchen and some crops. In the landslide area, 11 households were affected, the distance from the edge of the landslide to the nearest household is 5m; from the landslide location to the asphalt road is over 57m. Currently, the local authorities have mobilized households to move their belongings to a safe place.

According to preliminary assessment, the riverbank section in the landslide area has a narrowed terrain and flow, bottlenecks, and the sandbank soil (mainly sandy soil), lack of stability combined with fast-flowing water are the main causes of local landslides in this area.

Previously, in this landslide area, on November 4, 2022, the People's Committee of the former Dong Thap province issued Decision No. 1207 on declaring an emergency situation of landslide on Tien River in Tan Quoi commune, Thanh Binh district, Dong Thap province (now Tan Quoi hamlet, Tan Long commune). The affected area of the landslide is 1,500m long (from An Long ferry to the downstream), threatening the safety of life and property of 351 households living in the landslide area, including 40 households located close to the riverbank, which is very dangerous and needs to be urgently evacuated to a safe place.

Then, in early 2023, the People's Committee of Dong Thap province issued Decision 605 approving the Investment Project to build a concentrated resettlement area for residents of Rach Ma Truong, Tan Quoi commune, Thanh Binh district (now Tan Quoi hamlet, Tan Long commune). The project was invested with the goal of proactively arranging and rearranging rural residents, stabilizing spontaneous migration and resettlement in natural disaster and landslide areas, giving priority to households that had to relocate but had no other place to live.

The project invests in the synchronous construction of technical infrastructure for a residential area with an area of about 46,172m2 and the arrangement of about 191 households. The investment items of the project include: Leveling the ground, traffic system; domestic water supply system combined with fire prevention and fighting; rainwater and wastewater drainage system; public lighting system; domestic power supply system and transformer station. The total investment of the project is nearly 76 billion VND from the central budget support and local budget.

Currently, the project is under construction and is about to be completed and put into use. When the project is completed, households in the affected area, at risk of landslides in Tan Quoi hamlet, will be relocated to residential areas to live.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Thap province, since the beginning of the year, there have been 113 riverbank landslides in Dong Thap province, with a total length of nearly 16.5 km. The total damage is 164 billion VND. Currently, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Thap has established 92 landslide lists to propose to the Provincial People's Committee to fix, with a budget of more than 200 billion VND.
