Resident physician Nguyen Dinh Tien Trung chose to specialize in anatomy - Photo: Cut from clip
He also 'cleared the name' of this subject, saying that anatomy is not 'weighing the whole morgue' as shared online.
It doesn't take 3 years for a resident to learn anatomy.
On September 9, at Hanoi Medical University, "Match Day" took place - an event for new resident doctors to choose a major, receiving public attention.
Notably, on social networks, information was shared that Associate Professor Dr. Ngo Xuan Khoa - Head of the Department of Anatomy, Hanoi Medical University, said that during the 3 years of organizing "Match Day", for the first time, the Department of Human Anatomy had a resident doctor choose this major.
Someone even jokingly commented, "The teacher and student can handle the whole morgue."
Faced with this information, Associate Professor Dr. Ngo Xuan Khoa happily said that people do not clearly understand the field of anatomy and there is confusion.
"When the teachers announced the name of resident doctor Nguyen Dinh Tien Trung choosing the major of anatomy, they said he was the first student this year to choose this major. Then someone posted online that in the past 3 years, only one person chose the major, that Mr. Khoa had waited for such a long time; someone even jokingly said that the two of us… could weigh down the whole morgue. That is not true," he said.
"The medical industry has three specialties that are easily confused with each other: the first is anatomy, the second is pathology, and the third is forensic medicine," Associate Professor Khoa added.
How to understand anatomy correctly?
According to Mr. Khoa, this year the anatomy department has 2 quotas, 1 for Hanoi Medical University and 1 for Hanoi Medical University Branch in Thanh Hoa and has selected both. In 2024, the department will select 1 resident doctor and in 2023, 5 people will be selected. Currently, there are a total of 9 residents receiving specialized training.
"Anatomy is the study and teaching of the normal structure of the human body. Anatomy has three goals: specialized medical examination and treatment, scientific research and teaching, and is not related to the morgue or having to wait in the morgue for three years to get one student.
"I thought people were just joking when it was posted online. Many colleagues also called me when they saw that I had suddenly become famous all over the internet," Associate Professor Khoa humorously said.
He also quoted Prof. Dr. Nguyen Huu Tu, Principal of the school: any residency, regardless of the major, is equally difficult. The path to becoming a good doctor, a good specialist, famous like previous generations is not easy.
Everyone has to go through hardships, struggle in the hospital environment, dedicate themselves, make efforts and persevere. The important thing is not the order of choosing a major, but how each person builds their own value for the major they pursue. The residency training major is very special, training talents for the medical industry.
Second, "Match Day" is the day for residents to choose their major, mixed with excitement, some people are happy, some are a little sad because they couldn't choose the major they wanted, but all bring back beautiful memories.
"Like when I entered the 17th residency program, the quota was only 20 people and it was extremely competitive. Each major at that time only selected 1-2 people and they could not choose the major, the school would assign them, but everyone worked hard, loved their major and now they are all top teachers in their field.
This year, the target is more than 400 residents, showing that society's demand is greater. Although anatomy is not a very good major, I still love my major and have become the head of the anatomy department," Associate Professor Khoa shared.
Associate Professor Khoa also confided that teachers always respect their students and are present in the hall to welcome new residents - the "elite" of the medical industry. Regardless of whether the major is chosen by many or few, teachers are still waiting to give fresh bouquets of flowers, expressing their feelings and wishes that the candidates will return to their major, study well, and later contribute to their major, serving the people better.
