Syria continues to be hit by airstrikes

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên02/12/2023

Syrian state media reported that the country's air defenses repelled an Israeli missile attack on targets in the vicinity of the capital Damascus on Monday (December 2). Syria claimed to have shot down most of the Israeli missiles.

The Syrian Defense Ministry later said Israel had carried out an air strike from the Golan Heights towards several points in the vicinity of Damascus. No human casualties were reported but some infrastructure was destroyed, Reuters reported.

The Golan Heights is a disputed area between Syria and Israel, but is currently controlled by Israel.

Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes on its northern neighbor since the Syrian civil war began in 2011. The attacks have mainly targeted some Iranian-backed forces, Lebanese Hezbollah fighters, as well as Syrian army positions, according to Arab News.

The frequency of Israeli airstrikes in Syria has increased amid the Hamas-Israel conflict that broke out on October 7. Hamas is an ally of Hezbollah.

The Israeli military did not comment when asked by AFP about the latest attack. Israel rarely speaks out about individual strikes on Syria, but it has repeatedly said it will not allow its arch-foe Iran to expand its presence there.

Israeli airstrikes on November 26 left Damascus airport inoperable, just hours after flights resumed following a similar attack a month ago.
