Speeding up construction of Cho Moi - Bac Kan expressway

Construction started in mid-March 2025, with an investment capital of over VND5,700 billion, the Cho Moi - Bac Kan expressway is expected to be completed in 2026. This is a high target, especially in the context of difficulties and obstacles in site clearance and unfavorable construction weather conditions. However, as soon as the site clearance difficulties were gradually resolved, contractors began to speed up construction to complete the set goals.

Contractors mobilized maximum machinery, human resources, and worked overtime to speed up the construction progress of the Cho Moi - Bac Kan expressway project, immediately after the site clearance problem was resolved.

Untangling the site

The Cho Moi – Bac Kan Expressway Project has a total length of about 28.8km, of which the main route is 28.4km long and the extension section is 0.4km long. The route is designed according to expressway standards with a scale of 4 lanes and a speed of 80km/h.

The entire route has 18 bridges, 4 interchanges, 30 underpasses for people along with a system of service roads and level crossings, ensuring synchronous connection with the existing traffic network. The total investment of the project is more than 5,750 billion VND, from the state budget and additional sources. Construction started in March 2025, expected to be basically completed in 2026.

In the initial phase, the project encountered many difficulties due to slow site clearance, some locations were not completely handled, and the relocation of technical infrastructure (electricity, telecommunications) was still stuck. In addition, prolonged heavy rain also affected the construction progress.

With the strong direction of the Ministry of Construction , the People's Committee of Thai Nguyen province and the efforts of relevant units, the major problems have been resolved up to this point. Localities focused on supporting people to harvest crops to hand over land; contractors mobilized more equipment and human resources, taking advantage of favorable weather to speed up construction, prioritizing bridge, culvert and underpass items that already have available land.

Maximum mobilization of human resources and construction equipment

These days, at the construction site, the working atmosphere is urgent from early morning to late night. Hundreds of engineers and workers work in shifts to keep up with the progress.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Cuong, from Tuyen Quang , currently a worker at Phuong Thanh Transport Investment and Construction Joint Stock Company participating in the construction on the route, said: We usually start work from 6am to 11am and in the afternoon from 2pm to 6pm. Despite the hot weather, everyone tries to speed up the progress.

Phuong Thanh Transport Investment and Construction Joint Stock Company is one of the contractors present from the beginning to construct the road, having encountered difficulties due to the fragmented terrain, complex geology and slow site handover. However, the Company always strives to overcome all difficulties to ensure the overall progress of the Project.

Mr. Tran Ba Luan, CEO of the Company, shared: Since the end of July, when more than 71% of the site was handed over, we have mobilized maximum equipment and human resources, organized many construction teams, and worked extra night shifts to make up for the progress, especially at locations where people have finished harvesting crops and trees. Wherever the site is available, we organize construction there.

According to the Regional Land Fund Development Center Branch 6, by August 15, the project had handed over more than 24.5km of cleared land, the total recovered land area was 261.8ha, 174.8/261.8ha had been handed over to investors and contractors. Major bottlenecks have been basically resolved, creating conditions for contractors to implement many items in parallel.

Mr. Mac Van Nghiep, Executive Director of the Cho Moi - Bac Kan Expressway Project, said: The unit is making the most of the available land, prioritizing the construction of items that are less affected by the weather. When the land is completely handed over, 16 construction sites will be opened simultaneously, striving to open to traffic on schedule according to the Government's direction.

Cho Moi - Bac Kan Expressway, once completed, will create momentum for socio-economic development in the region.
Cho Moi - Bac Kan Expressway, once completed, will create momentum for socio-economic development in the region.

With the basic site clearance volume completed, along with the determination to stick to the construction progress, this will be the driving force and foundation for this important traffic project to be completed on schedule./.
