Russian group wants to build offshore wind power in Vietnam

Zarubezhneft, a corporation with more than 40 years of cooperation with the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group, expressed its desire to develop offshore wind power.

The information was stated by Mr. Kudryashov Sergei Ivanovich, General Director of Zarubezhneft, at a meeting with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on April 8, during his working visit to Vietnam.

Zarubezhneft has more than 40 years of cooperation with the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group ( Petrovietnam ) and two joint ventures, Vietsovpetro (in Vietnam) and Rusvietpetro (in Russia) in geological exploration and oil and gas exploitation.

Mr. Kudryashov Sergei Ivanovich said Zarubezhneft is completing procedures and plans to implement new projects in Vietnam, and at the same time wishes to expand cooperation, including developing offshore wind power.

Zarubezhneft General Director said that Russia will continue to create favorable conditions for the expansion of Rusvietpetro's projects in Russia in the coming time to develop more balanced oil and gas cooperation projects in Vietnam and Russia. He asked the Prime Minister to direct the two sides to coordinate to resolve difficulties and problems in cooperation projects.

The Prime Minister agreed that it is necessary to remove the obstacles raised by Zarubezhneft and welcomed the company to expand cooperation in oil, gas and energy with Vietnam, including in the wind power sector, on the basis of "harmonious benefits and shared risks".

He also wanted Russia to support and coordinate in handling outstanding issues, creating conditions for Petrovietnam to expand its investment in Russia. At the same time, the Prime Minister suggested that Zarubezhneft and PetroVietnam establish a working group to promote the handling of outstanding issues and research and propose appropriate cooperation contents.

A survey by the World Bank's Asia Energy Assessment Program found that Vietnam has the largest wind potential in Southeast Asia with a total wind power potential estimated at 513,360 MW.

According to the National Power Development Plan (Power Plan VIII) by 2030, offshore wind power will reach about 6,000 MW, which can increase further in case of rapid technology development, reasonable electricity prices and transmission costs.
