The Arab world convened foreign ministers, passed a resolution clarifying its stance on the Gaza Strip conflict, and will launch attacks against Israel.

On September 10, after the 162nd session of the Arab League (AL) Council at the foreign ministerial level in Cairo (Egypt), member countries expressed solidarity with Palestine and called on Israel to completely withdraw its troops from the Gaza Strip.

According to a resolution issued after the session, the foreign ministers expressed support for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who called for an official visit to the Gaza Strip with a plan to stop the conflict and achieve the goal of making Israel withdraw its troops, Al Mayadeen TV channel reported.

Officials representing AL member states attending the meeting also reaffirmed the full jurisdiction of the State of Palestine over its territory, stressing the importance of restoring the unity of this Islamic nation under the auspices of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).

The ministers said the PLO is the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people and factions should work to allow the government to carry out its duties across the country's territories.

In addition, the AL foreign ministers expressed their firm rejection of Israel's post-conflict plan and its control over any area in Gaza, including the Philadelphia corridor and Rafah border crossing on the Palestinian side.

The resolution stressed that the Palestinian-Egyptian border is a sovereign area that “must not be violated”, and affirmed the need to operate the Rafah crossing in accordance with existing rules and remove all obstacles to safe, full and rapid humanitarian access through this crossing.

The Israeli army has controlled the Philadelphia corridor, a 100-meter-wide and 14-kilometer-long buffer zone along the Egypt-Gaza border as well as the Rafah crossing on the Palestinian side, since May, and has prevented humanitarian aid trucks from entering Gaza.

At a press conference on September 2, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that Israeli forces “will not retreat,” and reiterated that controlling this corridor is important to prevent future arms smuggling from Egypt into Gaza.

In the resolution, the AL Foreign Ministers said that Mr. Netanyahu's "accusations" were intended to justify his refusal to withdraw from the Philadelphia corridor, hindering mediation efforts by Egypt, Qatar and the United States.

Israel's move is also seen as aimed at distracting public attention from its government's policies that increase tensions with the Palestinian people.

According to the resolution, the AL ministers called for the confirmation of the illegality of Israel's continued presence in Gaza in order to end it as soon as possible and for the immediate dismantling of all settlement activities.

In addition, the resolution tasks the New York Arab Group to take appropriate steps to freeze Israel's participation in the United Nations (UN) General Assembly.

The AL Foreign Ministers also agreed to formally intervene in support of the case filed by South Africa against Israel before the UN's main judicial body, the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

In the 162nd session of the AL Council, in addition to the participation of foreign ministers of member countries, there were also officials from the UN, the European Union (EU), as well as Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.

This is the first time in 13 years that a senior Turkish diplomat has attended an AL ministerial meeting.
