According to an official AFP tally, the war in Gaza began with a Hamas attack on October 7 that killed about 1,140 people in Israel, mostly civilians.

The militants also took about 250 hostages and Israel said about 132 of them remained in Gaza, including the bodies of at least 28 dead hostages.

Israel vowed to crush Hamas and launched a military offensive that Gaza's health ministry said had killed at least 26,083 people, about 70 percent of them women and children.

"No state is above the law"

“The ICJ order is an important reminder that no state is above the law,” Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki said in a statement

“Today marks a decisive victory for the international rule of law and an important milestone in the search for justice for the Palestinian people,” said the South African Foreign Ministry, which brought the case to the ICJ.

"Support for peace"

“We will continue to support peace and an end to war, the release of hostages, access to humanitarian aid and the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel, so that both states can coexist in peace and security,” said Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

"Hope the attack ends"

“We hope that Israel's attacks on women, children and the elderly will end,” said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

"Must obey orders"

“The orders of the International Court of Justice are binding on the parties and they must be complied with. The European Union expects their full, immediate and effective implementation,” the European Union said.

"Prevent genocide"

“The World Court’s landmark decision underscores the need for Israel and its allies to act immediately to prevent genocide and further atrocities against Palestinians in Gaza,” said Balkees Jarrah, deputy international justice director at Human Rights Watch.
