It is expected that on October 17, the People's Court of Ho Chi Minh City will announce the verdict in the case of "Fraudulent appropriation of property", "Money laundering", and "Illegal transportation of currency across the border" that occurred at Van Thinh Phat Group Joint Stock Company (VTP), Saigon Commercial Joint Stock Bank (SCB) and related units.
During nearly a month of trial, defendant Truong My Lan (Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of Van Thinh Phat Group) always said that she respected all decisions of the prosecution agencies. The remaining 33 defendants admitted as charged in the indictment.
During the trial, the defendant Truong My Lan did not protest her innocence. The defendant said that she did not propose the policy of issuing bonds and did not appropriate the money of the bondholders. However, the defendant pledged to use all of her assets to compensate the victims in the case.
Regarding the direction of handling damages for bondholders, defendant Lan said that in phase 1 of the case, the court ordered individuals and organizations to pay her 21,000 billion VND.
In addition, many credit institutions have used 17,000 billion VND from bond issuance money, so the defendant requested the court to prioritize using this money to remedy damages.
Defendant Truong My Lan also agreed to use many other assets worth thousands of billions of VND to remedy the consequences of the case. In particular, SCB is “borrowing” the 6A project in Trung Son area worth up to 20,000 billion VND and 65 other assets of the defendant.
In this case, defendant Truong My Lan was accused of illegally transporting more than 4.5 billion USD (about 106,730 billion VND) across the border in 10 years; laundering more than 445,000 billion VND and defrauding 35,824 victims through the issuance of fake bonds, appropriating more than 30,869 billion VND.
The prosecutor's representative proposed sentencing defendant Truong My Lan to life in prison for the crimes of "Fraudulent appropriation of property", "Money laundering", and "Illegal transportation of currency across the border".
The remaining defendants were recommended sentences ranging from 2 to 27 years in prison.
During the trial, it was noteworthy that defendant Truong My Lan asked for the return of two albino Hermès bags as souvenirs for her children and grandchildren; and for the return of her desktop computer and savings book in her daughter's name because she believed they were not related to the case.
