Valedictorian Vo Nguyen Anh Thu at the recent graduation ceremony of Ho Chi Minh City University of Law
Average score 9.21 - highest in the school's 42-year history
On August 18, Ho Chi Minh City University of Law held a graduation ceremony and awarded bachelor's degrees at the Military Zone 7 Gymnasium (Phu Nhuan District). Here, Vo Nguyen Anh Thu, a student majoring in high-quality law with French enhancement, spoke on behalf of more than 1,400 of her peers in front of the entire school. Thu was the valedictorian with an average score of 9.21 - the highest in the school's 42-year history.
"I have always tried my best because I wanted to be better than myself in the past, not aiming to become valedictorian. But when I achieved this title, I really appreciated it and considered it a great motivation to continue developing," the former student of Binh Phu High School (District 6, Ho Chi Minh City) confided.
Before becoming valedictorian, Thu was already a "bright example" in the eyes of her classmates. She achieved excellent student results in the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 school years, then was an excellent student in the entire course in her final year. The female student also continuously received scholarships to encourage learning from Ho Chi Minh City University of Law and then an Asean Study Tour scholarship in Singapore in 2022.

Always be disciplined and persistent with yourself
To achieve these achievements, according to the female student, is to find a suitable method, and more importantly, a positive learning attitude. Thu said that during her studies, she always maintained discipline and perseverance with herself, such as setting out tasks to do during the day and trying to complete them on time. "I don't want to procrastinate because the more I procrastinate, the lazier I become," Thu commented.
In addition, she maintains studying each chapter 4 times, including reading the materials by herself, listening to lectures in class, reviewing after finishing a chapter, a content and reviewing again when taking the exam. Thu often reviews general knowledge first to grasp the basics, then reviews in depth, proactively learning and explaining new knowledge, new problems that have not been taught to get points in advanced questions.
According to Thu, being proactive is also extremely important. In addition to being proactive in researching knowledge, students also need to be proactive in expressing their opinions and defending their own views, and this is the skill that female students in Ho Chi Minh City always pay attention to cultivating.
Turn limitations into advantages
Thu shared that law was one of the majors she was interested in and aimed for when she was in grade 12. However, because she was shy, afraid of communication and afraid of crowds, Thu still did not think about pursuing law until the last day, after hearing suggestions from relatives. "Although it was a hasty decision, I now feel it was the right one, because I have found another passion and gained very valuable experiences," the valedictorian confided.

Thu shared that she really enjoyed the feeling of learning why laws are regulated, amended, and why laws of different countries are different on the same issue. And according to Thu, understanding the nature, spirit of the law and how to apply the law is much more important than memorizing, remembering every detail and every clause.
After studying at school, Thu commented that although she has become much more confident than before, she is still an introvert who loves privacy and secrecy. "Being introverted is sometimes a great advantage because I am calm when solving a problem, listening thoroughly, thinking carefully before speaking and preparing well before acting. These are also the things that people pursuing a career in law should have," Thu said.
Another piece of advice that the female student wants to give to her juniors is that each person will have different circumstances and conditions, so they should not compare themselves with others, "as long as you are better than you were in the past, that is also a kind of success".
Having taught Anh Thu's class, Master Nguyen Hoang Thai Hy, a lecturer at the Faculty of International Law at Ho Chi Minh City University of Law, said he was "strongly impressed" with the female student's spirit and attitude towards learning. "Although she had just started learning French when she entered university, Thu always stood out in the specialized law classes taught in French. In life, she was always cheerful, gentle and extremely patient with her classmates," said Master Hy.

Master Hy commented that Thu is always steadfast in her goals, not being distracted by immediate difficulties or achievements. Thu demonstrated those qualities very clearly when she decided to do her graduation thesis entirely in French, with an extremely challenging topic related to law and technology, said Master Hy. And this helped the female student achieve a near-perfect score: 9.75.
Regarding her future plans, Thu said she wants to improve her foreign language skills to gain more opportunities and experiences. She plans to continue her graduate studies, and one of the options she is considering is the master's program in collaboration with a French university at Ho Chi Minh City University of Law.
