Mr Modi has been to the US five times since becoming prime minister in 2014, but the visit, which runs through Saturday, will be his first in the full diplomatic capacity of a state visit.

This is also the third state visit of President Joe Biden's term and the third visit by an Indian leader to the US, showing the increasingly close ties between Washington and New Delhi.
Mr Modi landed in New York on Tuesday afternoon local time, where he held meetings with business leaders including billionaire Elon Musk and will celebrate International Yoga Day on Wednesday before heading to Washington. He is scheduled to have a private dinner with Mr Biden on Wednesday, followed by talks at the White House and a state banquet on Thursday.
The visit is expected to see the two countries expand cooperation in the defense and high-tech industries, with India potentially getting access to key US technologies that it rarely shares with non-allied countries.
“This special invitation reflects the vitality of our partnership between democracies,” Mr. Modi said. “I will also meet a number of leading CEOs to discuss opportunities to enhance our trade and investment relationship and build resilient global supply chains.”
US lawmakers have also invited Mr. Modi to address a joint session of the US Congress. On the Ukraine issue, Mr. Mondi said before the trip: "I think India's position is known and understood by the whole world. The world has full confidence that India's top priority is peace ."
