At meetings with leaders of Western Australia, Ambassador Pham Hung Tam assessed that with the connection and active promotion of the Vietnamese Consulate General in Perth in recent times, the relationship between Western Australia and Vietnam is on a positive development path along with the strong development of the Vietnam-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
One of the advantages in the relationship between Western Australia and Vietnam is that thanks to the direct flight between Perth, the capital of Western Australia, and Ho Chi Minh City, the largest economic center of Vietnam, with a short flight time and much cheaper fares than from Perth to some other states of Australia, tourism activities, cultural exchange, economic and trade between Perth and Vietnam are increasingly vibrant.
Regarding education, the Ambassador informed that Vietnam and Australia have established a Vietnam-Australia joint working group on cross-border education chaired by the two countries ' Ministries of Education and Training to coordinate and promote international training cooperation in various forms.
Accordingly, the Ambassador proposed that the University of Western Australia could consider opening a branch in Vietnam following the model that Australia's RMIT University has implemented to increase training cooperation with Vietnamese educational institutions. The Ambassador also highly appreciated and requested the Western Australian government to continue to pay attention and create conditions for more than 3,000 Vietnamese students to study here.
Regarding import and export of goods, the Ambassador emphasized that Vietnam has a need to import raw materials from Australia to serve production activities, especially iron ore from Western Australia and currently, Vietnam is one of the five largest iron ore export markets of Western Australia.
In contrast, Vietnam has the potential to export many electronic, consumer and construction materials products to the Australian market.
In addition, as Western Australia has a great demand for skilled construction workers and engineers, this is also an area with great potential for cooperation. The Ambassador shared the idea of promoting an agreement at the Government level regarding the recognition of skills of engineers and workers of the two countries.
The Ambassador also emphasized that every year there are more than 200,000 Vietnamese tourists coming to Australia, of which the number of visitors to Western Australia is increasing. In return, there are about 500,000 Australian tourists coming to Vietnam and people-to-people exchanges will help enhance understanding and connection between the two sides, laying the foundation for promoting cooperation in many other fields.
