The currents that flow with the land
Many tourists when coming to Hoi An have had the opportunity to stroll on the Hoai River and enjoy the ancient town when the night falls. A few others have traveled the lower Thu Bon River or the last section of the Co Co River flowing into Cua Dai to contemplate the life of the river and the people here. However, the memories of Quang Nam river tourism after many years are still only contained in these sections.
During a recent famtrip, a Vietravel representative was amazed by the beauty of the Thu Bon River Delta. “I was very surprised because Quang Nam has many attractive destinations besides Hoi An. The potential for river tourism in Quang Nam is huge but it has not yet built a brand. Although we have only conducted a preliminary survey, we have envisioned that the tourism resources along the Thu Bon River are enough material to design a tour of the five elements of metal - wood - water - fire - earth, creating a different feeling for tourists.”
The perspective of a tourism worker who has not had many opportunities to experience Quang Nam once again raises a thought-provoking issue.
Going back in time, the formation of the two heritages Hoi An and My Son with the main connecting sign is the Thu Bon River. Over thousands of years of vicissitudes, the Thu River has silently distilled the quintessence of land and water to create two world heritages along with a network of rich communities and craft villages stretching along the riverbank and still changing today.
The memory of Quang Nam's rivers and canals is not only preserved in the Thu Bon River. Following the eastern sand strip, many merchant boats and merchant ships loaded with local products have been bustling back and forth on the Truong Giang and Co Co Rivers, helping the port city of Hoi An stand firm in the world's maritime trade network for centuries. There is also the Vinh Dien canal carved on the nine urns of Hue citadel, marking a time of expanding the territory and saving the world of the Nguyen Dynasty...
What is more unique is that this river system is connected and intertwined without flowing separately. The story of the rivers of Quang Nam province carries the breath of Quang Nam, an open land…
Still waiting to wake up
For a long time, in most of the discussion programs on developing new tourism products in Quang Nam, river tourism has been mentioned. Many opinions on connecting tourism in Tam Ky - Phu Ninh - Nui Thanh need to focus on river tourism.
The core to promote the connection between Hoi An - Dien Ban - Duy Xuyen is certainly the Thu Bon River. An important part of the strategy to promote river tourism in Da Nang in the coming period also mentions the connection with the river network of Quang Nam. But up to now, everything is still mainly just planning.
Mr. Van Ba Son - Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism said: "In many localities in the country such as the Mekong Delta provinces, Lao Cai, Phu Tho or Da Nang, river tourism is organized quite well. The potential for river tourism in Quang Nam is very large, especially the Thu Bon River, but for some reasons, this activity is still quiet and open, mainly due to legal procedures for planning wharves and regulations on means of transport".
While some rivers are still stuck in their waterways, the Thu Bon River only needs to organize the planning of wharves, connect tourist attractions and craft villages together to create a continuous tourist route - connecting Hoi An ancient town, Kim Bong carpentry village, Thanh Ha pottery village, Ban Thach mat village, traditional craft villages in Dien Ban...
Even further upstream, some fascinating cultural-ecological areas are waiting for boats to return to the mother river such as My Son Temple Complex, Dai Binh Eco-village, Hon Kem Da Dung...
Currently, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Nam has asked the three localities of Hoi An - Dien Ban - Duy Xuyen to sit together to discuss the plan and in 2025 will invite Que Son district to join, promoting with businesses that really want to systematically develop tourism on the Thu Bon river.
Mr. Ho Quang Minh - Deputy Director of the Department of Transport said that if the unique river system is not promoted to connect regional tourism, it would be a pity.
At the provincial level, the Department of Transport has advised the provincial leaders as well as cooperated with Da Nang to plan a number of common connections related to river tourism. Localities in the province need to actively cooperate to shape and establish inland waterway tourism routes with specific landing points for each destination and in accordance with the higher-level planning to have a basis to soon promote this type.
Quang Nam river tourism has enough ingredients to captivate tourists. Travelers who have set foot in Quang Nam and left with a vast emptiness, feel like something is missing from this land. Is it because they have never once experienced the waves of the country?
