The Ho Chi Minh City People's Council has just approved the investment policy for the project to expand the access road to the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway, from An Phu intersection to Ring Road 2 with a total investment of nearly 1,000 billion VND.
This is an important policy, of great significance to the infrastructure, increasing the traffic capacity of the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway. Because, since its inauguration, the number of vehicles choosing to travel through the expressway has been constantly increasing. On average, each year it increases by about 11%.
According to the HCM City Department of Transport, it is forecasted that by 2025, the expressway section from HCM City to Long Thanh will have about 72,254 vehicles per day and night, exceeding the current 4-lane capacity by 25%. Therefore, the expansion of the expressway section from HCM City to Long Thanh, including the road leading from An Phu intersection to Ring Road 2, is extremely necessary and urgent.
According to the reporter of Giao thong Newspaper, the 3.2km long road leading to the highway with 4 lanes has been invested in and built in a spacious and modern manner. During normal hours, the road is clear and traffic flows smoothly.
However, during rush hour or on weekends, holidays, Tet... this road is always in a state of serious traffic jams. Vehicles have to line up, moving little by little. Although the road is only over 3km long, many times, drivers have to "stand still", spending hours to get on the highway.
Nguyen Ngoc Danh, a container truck driver, shared that traffic jams on the ramps and on the highway are a common concern for drivers. The time spent "crawl" on the road not only reduces work efficiency, causes pressure, fatigue, and delays delivery/pickup time, but also leads to many unsafe risks because driving a bulky vehicle like a container truck will be more difficult when stuck in traffic.
"Expanding the access road to the highway is very reasonable, it should have been done from the beginning. If we want to exploit the highway effectively, the access road must be spacious and smooth. If there are always traffic jams, going on the highway is no different from going on the national highway," said Mr. Danh.
According to the plan, the road connecting to the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway will be expanded from 4 lanes to 8 lanes. Of which, more than 2km of road and two Muong Kenh bridges, the overpass over Do Xuan Hop route will be expanded synchronously.
The project is expected to start in 2025 and be completed within a year. When completed, the project will be synchronized with the An Phu intersection, which is currently under construction with a modern three-story scale. (In the photo is the starting point of the access road to the highway at the An Phu intersection).
Regarding the specific roadmap, it is expected that from the second to third quarter of 2024, the investment policy proposal will be prepared, submitted for appraisal and approval. From the fourth quarter of 2024 to the first quarter of 2025, the feasibility study report will be prepared and submitted to the competent authority for appraisal and approval. The project will start construction in the third quarter of 2025 and be put into operation in the fourth quarter of 2026.
The implementation of the project to expand the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway is considered quite favorable because it requires little site clearance. Almost all along the route, there is already a clear site for construction.
Currently, Ho Chi Minh City has invested in a 3-level An Phu intersection, to be completed in 2025. Along with that, the expansion of the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh expressway is also planned to be expanded from 8 to 10 lanes, serving Long Thanh airport when it comes into operation.
When the An Phu interchange is completed, the approach road and highway will also be expanded, opening up the eastern gateway of Ho Chi Minh City, increasing the connection between Ho Chi Minh City and Long Thanh airport and the Southeast.
