According to information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , General Secretary To Lam sent a congratulatory message to Ms. Takaichi Sanae on October 4, the same day she was elected to hold the position of President of the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan (LDP).
Ms. Takaichi Sanae became the first female leader of the LDP, the ruling party in Japan, after going through two rounds of voting at the party's headquarters on October 4.
The LDP lost its majority in the Diet under Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. However, the party's president is likely to become the new prime minister of the land of the rising sun as the LDP remains the largest group in the Diet.
In other words, according to observers, Ms. Takaichi Sanae is facing the opportunity to become the first female Prime Minister in Japanese history. The vote in the National Assembly to choose the successor of Mr. Shigeru Ishiba is scheduled to take place on October 15.
Takaichi Sanae, 64, was once seen as the public's top choice with strong support from local party bases as she sought to become Japan's first female prime minister.
She is known for her support of strong fiscal and monetary stimulus, with a pledge to double the size of Japan's economy in a decade through massive state investments in new technology, infrastructure, food production and economic security.
Some of her supporters see her as LDP president as a turning point in Japan's male-dominated politics, with the new LDP president making a bold pledge to bring the number of women in the cabinet to the level of Nordic countries.
"The fact that a woman was chosen can be seen positively. I think it shows that Japan is really starting to change and that the message is being conveyed," Misato Kikuchi, 30, an office worker, told Reuters.
