Ho Chi Minh City starts construction of 3 key bridges worth over 18,000 billion VND

HCMC - Can Gio Bridge, Thu Thiem 4 Bridge, and the pedestrian bridge across the Saigon River with a total investment of more than VND18,000 billion are planned to start construction in 2025 to help increase connectivity and remove infrastructure bottlenecks in many areas in HCMC.

Can Gio Bridge The Can Gio Bridge project has a total capital of more than 11,000 billion VND and is proposed to be invested in the form of BOT (build - operate - transfer). Recently, the Department of Transport of Ho Chi Minh City proposed that the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City balance capital of about 5,246 billion VND to participate in the project investment (equivalent to nearly 50% of the total investment), the rest will be mobilized by the investor. According to the proposal of the Department of Transport, the starting point of Can Gio Bridge is at Road 15B (Nha Be District), about 500m north of Muong Ngang Canal. Then the bridge crosses Nguyen Binh Street and then crosses Soai Rap River. When entering Can Gio District, the bridge will connect to Rung Sac Street at a location about 2.1km south of Binh Khanh Ferry. Can Gio Bridge has a total length of 7.3km (of which Can Gio Bridge is nearly 3km long, the approach road is more than 4.3km long), with a scale of 6 lanes (4 motor lanes, 2 non-motorized lanes), speed of 60km/h. The bridge is built in the form of a cable-stayed bridge with the main span length of the bridge in the middle of the river being 350m, placed on two piers 150m high. Can Gio Bridge will have a navigation clearance of 55m (equivalent to Binh Khanh Bridge of the Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway project) - the highest in Vietnam at present.

The project will be submitted to the HCMC People's Council for approval of the investment policy in 2024, start construction in 2025, and complete in 2028. At that time, Can Gio Bridge will replace Phu My Bridge (connecting Thu Duc City and District 7) or Binh Khanh Bridge, becoming the largest cable-stayed bridge in HCMC. At the same time, Can Gio Bridge will replace Binh Khanh Ferry connecting the South of HCMC with Can Gio District, meeting the traffic needs in the area. Thereby, creating conditions to promote and develop 2 projects in Can Gio: Can Gio International Transit Port and Can Gio Coastal Tourism Urban Area. Thu Thiem 4 Bridge Thu Thiem 4 Bridge has a total investment of about 6,030 billion VND, invested in the form of BOT. This project has just been proposed by the HCMC Department of Transport to the HCMC People's Committee to balance capital of about 2,826 billion VND to participate in the investment (equivalent to about 50% of the total investment). According to the proposal, the total length of Thu Thiem 4 bridge is about 2.16km (of which the bridge is longer than 1.6km) with 6 lanes. The bridge can raise and lower the main span with a maximum clearance of 45m. This type of bridge design is considered by the Department of Transport to be unprecedented in Vietnam, helping large ships easily travel on the Saigon River into the center of Ho Chi Minh City.

The project starts from the section before the intersection of Tan Thuan 2 Bridge - Nguyen Van Linh, goes along Nguyen Van Linh Street, turns left at Huynh Tan Phat intersection to connect to Luu Trong Lu Street (District 7). The bridge continues to cut through Tan Thuan Port, crosses the Saigon River connecting Thu Thiem Urban Area at the intersection of the North-South axis and Bui Thien Ngo Street. The project will be submitted to the HCMC People's Council for approval of the investment policy this year, starting construction in 2025 and completing in 2028. When completed, Thu Thiem 4 Bridge, in addition to promoting the development of Thu Thiem New Urban Area, will also shorten the travel time from Thu Duc City and Binh Thanh District through Districts 7, 8, Nha Be, and Binh Chanh. The project also helps reduce congestion around Ben Nghe Port, Tan Thuan Export Processing Zone, and Huynh Tan Phat Street in District 7. Pedestrian bridge over Saigon River Pedestrian bridge over Saigon River connecting District 1 and Thu Duc City has a total investment of more than 1,000 billion VND. The bridge is 500m long, located between Ba Son Bridge and Saigon River Tunnel. The bridge head on the District 1 side is located in Bach Dang Port Park and closest to Nguyen Hue Walking Street. The Thu Duc City side is located at the Riverside Park and outside the boundary of Area A, south of the Central Square in Thu Thiem New Urban Area.

According to the architectural design of the pedestrian bridge across the Saigon River chosen by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, the bridge will have the image of a water coconut leaf - a familiar image of the South. The project is designed to withstand level 7 earthquakes, gusts of wind, and vibrations when crowds gather... In addition to serving pedestrians, the bridge also has lanes for bicycles and people with disabilities. The bridge is also designed for ambulances in emergency situations. In early December 2023, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport signed a memorandum of understanding to sponsor the project. Accordingly, the enterprise will sponsor the entire construction cost of the project according to the policy, planning, and design plan approved by the city. The Department of Transport said it is completing the steps to submit for approval of the project's investment policy. Ho Chi Minh City aims to start construction of the pedestrian bridge across the Saigon River on April 30, 2025 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day.
