The two players Tran Quyet Chien and Eddy Merckx started off quite enthusiastically in the championship match. However, when the score reached 24-24, both sides made many mistakes.

After several rounds without scoring any points, Eddy Merckx scored 5 points in a row, ending the first half with a score of 29–24 (in the 3-cushion carom billiards World Cup finals, when a player scores 25 or more, the match will be interrupted between two rounds).

Right at the beginning of the second half, Eddy Merckx scored 11 points in a row, leading Tran Quyet Chien 38-24.

At this point, the Belgian player had a huge psychological advantage, while the mental disadvantage shifted to Tran Quyet Chien.

Eddy Merckx led 39-30, 46-37, before the Belgian won 50-40, after 27 rounds.

This was quite a regrettable defeat for Tran Quyet Chien, because this was a tournament in which he played very well, from the first match until before the final match.
