In a small level 4 house in Tam Anh commune, Da Nang city, Mrs. Huynh Thi Mai, wife of People's Armed Forces Hero, Police Colonel Ha Lan, who is 100 years old this year, lives alone, quietly with old mementos. With no children or relatives around, she preserves the house as if it were a memory - a place that witnessed the life of her husband who devoted his youth to the revolution and the country.

Colonel Ha Lan was born in 1926, joined the revolution since 1945, and held many key positions in the People's Public Security Force. During the resistance war against the US, he was one of the pioneers in building a revolutionary base in Tra My, an important strategic area under the Zone V Party Committee. His contributions were recognized by the State with the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces in 1985, a source of pride not only for the public security sector, but also for his hometown Tam Hoa, and for the armed forces of the Central Highlands.

Colonel Ha Lan passed away in 2013. Since then, his wife, Huynh Thi Mai, has lived alone in a small house. Old photos, old altars, and medals stained by time are still solemnly preserved – as evidence of a life dedicated to the Fatherland and the people.

With the moral of "When drinking water, remember its source", on this 27/7, officers and soldiers of Tam Thanh Border Guard Station (Da Nang City Border Guard Command) did a loving job: They went to Mr. and Mrs. Lan-Mai's house, repainted the memorial altar, and decorated each certificate of merit, each medal frame. 15 titles were re-enclosed in a new, shiny glass frame, showing the respect and gratitude of today's generation to the deceased.

"The officers and soldiers of Tam Thanh Border Guard Station also restored photos of martyrs and handed them to their relatives in Quang Phu Ward. This year, the Station has organized two restorations of nearly 50 photos of martyrs. We also supported a wounded soldier in Tam Xuan Commune to renovate his living area. All of this comes from the collective's contributions and the mobilization of kind-hearted people," said Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Minh Vuong, Political Commissar of Tam Thanh Border Guard Station.

Spreading the moral "When drinking water, remember its source"

On this occasion, the Da Nang Youth Union coordinated with the youth of the police force and border guards to organize a series of activities to deeply express gratitude, spreading the morality of "When drinking water, remember its source" to every member and youth throughout the city.

In particular, the program "Flowers for martyrs' graves" was held simultaneously at 27 cemeteries in Da Nang. Thousands of union members and youths were present from early morning on July 18, burning incense and replacing nearly 24,000 flower vases at martyrs' graves.

Not only that, within the framework of the peak program from July 20 to July 27, the Da Nang Youth Union also coordinated with units to organize medical examinations, provide free medicine, and give gifts to Vietnamese Heroic Mothers, wounded soldiers, sick soldiers, and people in difficult circumstances.

In particular, 9 houses of gratitude and charity have been repaired and newly built, each worth 60 million VND, helping families of meritorious people stabilize their lives and feel secure in their old age.

Sharing about this series of meaningful activities, Mr. Le Kim Thuong, Deputy Secretary of the Da Nang City Youth Union, affirmed: “The Standing Committee of the City Youth Union hopes that each member and youth will not only show gratitude through words but also through concrete actions. Organizing gratitude activities is a responsibility and also a source of pride for the city's youth - the generation that can live in peace thanks to the sacrifices of previous generations.”
