Resolutely and effectively deploy the work to combat IUU fishing

(GLO)- Vice Chairman of Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee Duong Mah Tiep recently inspected the situation of seafood production and anti-IUU fishing activities in Hoai Nhon Bac ward and worked with Viet Uc-Phu My Company Limited (An Luong commune).

In the morning, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Duong Mah Tiep and the working delegation inspected the Tam Quan Boat Anchorage Area with an area of ​​60 hectares, located in Hoai Nhon Bac Ward. The anchorage area has a maximum capacity of 1,000-1,200 ships, invested in construction and put into use in 2011.

Next, the Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee inspected the operations at Tam Quan Fishing Port. This is a type II fishing port with a total water area of ​​10 hectares, a channel depth of 5 meters, and a port land area of ​​3.8 hectares; equipment mainly serving cargo loading and unloading, the number of fishing boats passing through the port is 20,000/year, cargo loading and unloading capacity is 40,000 tons/year, the total seafood output to the port is estimated at 20,000 tons/year. Of which, ocean tuna output accounts for a large proportion of the country.

Currently, the Tam Quan storm shelter and fishing port are facing a number of problems such as: the Tam Quan estuary channel is small, narrow and often silted up; fishing boats in the open sea are increasingly large in capacity and power, making entry and exit very difficult and unsafe.

Hoai Nhon Bac Ward currently has 1,373 vessels, accounting for about 22.45% of the province's fishing vessels; mainly engaged in ocean tuna fishing with 976 vessels. With the strength of aquatic exploitation, from the beginning of 2025 up to now, fishermen in the ward have exploited and caught an estimated nearly 11,700 tons; of which, ocean tuna reached nearly 4,150 tons, reaching 52.9% of the yearly plan.

Along with that, in the ward there are 223 shrimp ponds with an area of ​​58.5 hectares, annual output reaching about 260 tons. In recent times, the locality has promoted the development of the fisheries industry, which accounts for a large proportion of the province; at the same time, drastically and synchronously implemented many solutions in the work of combating illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Speaking at the conclusion of the working session with Hoai Nhon Bac ward, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Duong Mah Tiep stated: Vietnam has basically completed over 80% of the content committed to the European Commission (EC) in fishing and aquatic exploitation activities.

To move towards removing the IUU "yellow card" warning as directed by the Government , the functional branches of the province and Hoai Nhon Bac ward need to coordinate to continue to resolutely and effectively implement the work of combating IUU fishing; research the conversion of ineffective fishing areas to aquaculture, aiming to develop the fisheries industry sustainably and effectively.

Along with that, step up propaganda and mobilization work on combating IUU fishing, resolutely and strictly handle violations; at the same time, carefully prepare conditions to work with the European Commission's Survey Team in the coming time.

The Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee also requested the relevant departments and branches to advise and propose a plan to dredge the channel and channel of Tam Quan Boat Anchorage Area and complete the Project to upgrade Tam Quan Fishing Port to a Type I port, in order to meet the needs of anchoring, sheltering and fishing activities.

On the same afternoon, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Duong Mah Tiep and the working delegation surveyed the high-tech shrimp farming model of Viet Uc-Phu My Company Limited (An Luong commune).

This is one of two high-tech shrimp farming enterprises in the province with the main field of activity being the production of commercial white-leg shrimp. Currently, the Company is producing in 8 greenhouses and 15 net houses with an expected output of about 900 to 1,000 tons in 2025, with revenue reaching 170 billion VND.

Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Duong Mah Tiep acknowledged that along with production activities, over the past time, Viet Uc-Phu My Company Limited has always accompanied the development of Gia Lai province.

Comrade Duong Mah Tiep stated: Currently, the province is rebuilding the provincial planning with a new strategic vision to achieve the double-digit growth target in the next term.

Sharing the difficulties and recommendations of the Company, the Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee hopes that the enterprise will continue to accompany the province; at the same time, he requested departments and branches to research and advise on the most optimal solution, ensuring harmonious interests in the common development of enterprises and localities.
