China sets medal record, Thailand is number 1 in Southeast Asia

The Chinese sports delegation ranked first in the overall medal tally of the 19th ASIAD. The host country won 201 gold medals, 111 silver medals and 71 bronze medals.

China continues to dominate Asian sports. They have won the overall championship 11 times in a row since the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi (India). In addition, China also broke the record for the number of gold medals won at a single Asian Games with 201, surpassing their previous record of 199 in Guangzhou 2010.

Swimming brought home the most gold medals for the Chinese delegation with 28 medals in 41 events. They also broke the record of the Japanese swimming team at the 1978 Asian Games when they won 25 gold medals.

The Chinese athletics team ranked second in the list of gold medalists at the 19th Asian Games, with 19 medals. China was 9 medals ahead of the Bahrain athletics team - a very strong country in this sport. They also set 3 records at the Games.

Ranked second on the overall table is the Japanese Sports Delegation. This country won 52 gold medals, 67 silver medals and 69 bronze medals. The remaining positions in the top 5 belong to Korea, India and Uzbekistan respectively.

The Thai sports delegation affirmed their position as the number 1 sports nation in Southeast Asia. They ranked 8th with 12 gold medals, 14 silver medals and 32 bronze medals. Since 1998, except for the Asian Games held in the region, Thailand has held the number 1 position among Southeast Asian countries.

The next positions belong to the delegations of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore. The Vietnamese sports delegation only ranked 5th (21st on the overall table) with 3 gold medals, 5 silver medals and 19 bronze medals.

14 sports delegations did not win any gold medals, of which 4 delegations, Cambodia, Lebanon, Palestine and Syria, ranked last with only 1 bronze medal.
