To get foreign language points for graduation, you must take the exam.
Article 39 of the Draft Regulations on High School Graduation Exams in 2025 stipulates: "Candidates who are eligible for exemption from the foreign language exam will not have their scores converted to be calculated into the total graduation score."
This means that the score for high school graduation recognition for candidates exempted from foreign language exams is only 3 subjects.
Specifically, the formula for calculating scores for high school graduation recognition in two cases: taking and not taking a foreign language exam is as follows:
In cases where one is eligible for exemption from the foreign language test but still wants to take this subject in the graduation exam, the actual test results must be used to calculate the high school graduation score.
Conditions for exemption from foreign language exam remain the same as previous years.
The first case is a member of the national team participating in the International Foreign Language Olympics.
The second case is for people who have a foreign language certificate equivalent to level 3 or higher in the 6-level foreign language proficiency framework used for Vietnam and valid until the date of exam registration.
With IELTS, the equivalent score to be exempt from the foreign language test is from 4.0.
Graduation score includes 50% of the transcript score of all 3 years of high school
The above formula for calculating graduation scores shows that the 3-year high school transcript score plays an important role, accounting for 50% of the total score.
In previous years, the transcript score only accounted for 30% and only used the 12th grade learning results.
Number of exam sessions shortened from 4 to 3
By reducing the number of subjects/candidate from 6 to 4, the number of exam sessions is reduced from 4 to 3.
In which, literature and math are tested in separate sessions, the remaining two subjects are combined into one exam session.
Candidates can choose 2 of the following subjects: physics, chemistry, biology, history, geography, economic and legal education, information technology, technology - industry, technology - agriculture, foreign languages.
Foreign languages include 7 languages: English, Russian, French, Chinese, German, Japanese, Korean.
Notably, candidates can register to take a foreign language exam different from the foreign language they are studying in high school.
While the remaining subjects are compulsory for candidates to study in high school.
There are two types of high school graduation exams in 2025.
The 2025 high school graduation exam has two types of exam questions for two different subjects.
Exam questions according to the 2018 General Education Program for candidates studying this program (born in 2007).
The exam follows the 2006 General Education Program for candidates who did not study the 2018 General Education Program and have not graduated from high school (born in 2006 or earlier).
Candidates who have graduated from high school have the right to choose to take one of the two types of exams above to get the score for admission to university or college.
