Successful asylum seekers will be allowed to work for three to six months after entering Germany, down from the current nine months, according to Interior Minister Nancy Faeser. Those whose asylum applications are rejected but who cannot be deported for reasons such as illness will also be allowed to work in the future, the head of the Interior Ministry said.

However, citizens from countries considered “safe origin”, but with no reason to stay or to hide their identity, will not be allowed to work.

Ms. Faeser emphasized that although it must wait for the approval of the National Assembly before officially taking effect, the above bill is very important to help asylum seekers find jobs sooner, in the context that Europe's largest economy is seriously lacking a skilled workforce and is under pressure due to the increasing wave of immigration.

Last week, the German Cabinet approved legislation that makes it easier for authorities to deport individuals who have been denied asylum, but the law has been heavily criticized by human rights groups and the Green Party.

Early next week, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will hold a meeting with the leaders of the country's 16 states, with migration expected to be at the top of the agenda.
