TPO - With just over a month left until the Lunar New Year, people in the peach blossom village in Nghe An are busy stripping leaves and tending to the trees, waiting for the day to bring "spring colors" to every home.

Nghi An commune is considered the peach blossom growing capital of Vinh city, Nghe An. Every year, the commune supplies the market with tens of thousands of peach trees for Tet.

These days, peach garden owners in Nghi An commune have begun stripping all the leaves from the trees. Mr. Nguyen Van Huyen’s family (75 years old, resident of Hamlet 7, Nghi An commune) has more than 100 peach trees waiting to be sold during Tet. He takes very good care of these peach trees.

“The most suitable time to strip peach leaves is about 40-45 days before Tet. However, stripping leaves also depends on the weather, tree variety and age. The effect of stripping leaves is to help the tree concentrate nutrients on making buds, ensuring that flower buds are abundant, even, plump, flowers are large, petals are thick, and colors are beautiful,” Mr. Huyen shared.

Peach growers hope that after stripping the leaves, the weather will be sunny for about a week, at which time flower buds will form.

After the plant buds, the weather turns cold, which helps to slow down the development of flower buds. If there is sunshine near Tet, the flowers will bloom at the right time and sell for a better price.

“Peach leaf stripping requires meticulousness and effort, it must be done one peach tree at a time, one branch at a time, completely by hand. In particular, when stripping, do not strip the leaves straight down, doing so will damage the flower buds,” said Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong (42 years old).

For high branches, people use ladders or high chairs to stand and strip leaves.

The peach blossoms here are light pink, have large buds, beautiful petals, last a long time, have eye-catching colors, and are green in color. Many traders have visited the garden to survey prices to prepare for the Tet market. Many peach branches with large roots and beautiful shapes have been ordered by customers.

This year, the weather is favorable so the peach trees grow and develop better. Peach growers here are hopeful that this year's peach season will bring a bumper harvest in both yield and price.

Mr. Chu Van Mai, Chairman of Nghi An Commune People's Committee, said: "The whole commune has about 300 households growing peach trees, small households have a few dozen trees, large households have up to a few hundred trees. Growing peach trees helps people have a good income, if the weather is favorable, many households earn hundreds of millions after each crop."
