The sun rises after the flood, teachers are busy 'rescuing' books, preserving knowledge for students
TPO - As the flood waters receded, teachers in many schools in the flood-prone areas of Nghe An were busy drying books and rearranging school supplies for students. In the new sunshine, they not only “saved” wet notebooks but also preserved knowledge and cherished the students’ dreams of going to school.

Tan Ky Commune ( Nghe An Province) is one of the localities that suffered heavy damage after storm No. 10. After the storm, floodwaters from upstream flooded more than 2,000 households; nearly 10,000 people in 20/25 hamlets had to evacuate and relocate urgently. Of which, 4 primary schools, 4 secondary schools and 4 kindergartens in the area were deeply submerged in water, students could not go to school.
Many schools were severely damaged after the storm and flood.
After the floodwaters receded, the yard of Ky Tan Primary School (Tan Ky Commune) became a place to dry mud-soaked notebooks and books. The blurred notebooks and books torn from being soaked in water for many days were brought out by teachers to the yard, spread across the walkways and hung on ropes to dry.
Mr. Dinh Van Tan, Principal of Ky Tan Primary School, said that storm No. 10 caused heavy damage to the school. After the storm, floodwaters rose high, causing flooding for many days. Many classrooms had their roofs blown off, and teaching and learning equipment such as computers, televisions, etc. were soaked in water, causing damage, with an estimated loss of nearly 300 million VND. “After storm No. 10, water from upstream flooded the school. After 3 days of being surrounded by floodwaters, it was not until October 4 that the floodwaters began to recede, and the school was able to clean up and overcome the consequences. After much effort, this morning (October 6), students returned to school, but the entire school still had no electricity. Although students were able to return to school, many of them, because their homes were in deep flood areas, had all their clothes and books swept away, so they really need help from benefactors,” said Mr. Tan.
At Thanh Son Primary School (Thanh Binh Tho Commune), teachers and local authorities are urgently working to overcome the consequences of the storm and flood. However, the school is located in an area deeply flooded after the storm, and the water is slowly receding, so most of the school's assets such as machinery, tables, chairs, books, etc. are severely damaged.
Teachers at Thanh Son Primary School “save the sun” to dry books for students after the flood. “After nearly a week of efforts to overcome the situation, today (October 6) we were able to welcome students back to school. However, the damage caused by the storm is too great, we will take steps to ensure the students' learning,” said a representative of Thanh Son Primary School.
Over the past few days, teachers, youth union members, police and soldiers have worked hard to clean up schools and overcome the consequences of storms and floods to welcome students back to school.
Mr. Nguyen Trong Hoan, Chief of Office of Nghe An Department of Education and Training, said that heavy rain and whirlwinds caused by storm No. 10 have caused great damage to the school system, estimated at more than 300 billion VND. As of today (October 6), there are still about 20 kindergartens that have not been able to welcome students back to school. "The Department has directed schools to report on the damage and deterioration to have support plans in the coming time. At the same time, schools are required to proactively grasp the situation and only organize teaching again when they ensure the necessary conditions to ensure absolute safety for teachers and students when going to school," said Mr. Hoan.
