The US Dollar Index (DXY) measures the greenback's fluctuations against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF), recording at 106.24 points.
The yen fell against the dollar, slipping slightly from a sharp rise in the previous session on suspicions of Japanese government intervention in the currency market. This was said to have helped the yen improve by 5 USD/JPY.
USD/JPY was up 0.88% at 157.73, but still near a 34-year high of 160.245 hit on Monday. The yen fell 4.04% against the dollar in April, its biggest monthly decline since February 2023.
Economic data showed that US labor costs rose more than expected in the first quarter amid rising wages and benefits. This reinforced the view that US inflation was rising at the beginning of the year and could delay the US Federal Reserve's interest rate cuts. On the other hand, the USD Index also benefited from the recent data, rising 0.52% to 106.24.
Bank of Japan data on Tuesday showed officials may have spent about 5.5 trillion yen ($35.05 billion) to support the yen.
According to the CME FedWatch tool, the FED will at least cut interest rates by 25 basis points in September (probability is nearly 50%)
The euro fell 0.42% to $1.0674 per euro. The pound weakened 0.49% to $1.2499 per pound.
The dollar index has risen 1.7% since the start of April, its biggest monthly gain since January. The euro has fallen 1.11% for the month. The pound has fallen 1.02% - its biggest monthly decline since September.
Bank of America expert Paul Ciana predicts another rally in the second quarter for the USD.
