AI applications for smart traffic management

High vehicle density, uneven traffic awareness, while traditional management solutions are increasingly revealing many limitations. Therefore, to control this situation, the main solution is to apply artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

Traffic flow optimization is just one of the applications of AI in Intelligent Transport Systems. Currently, Hanoi City has been implementing AI application solution packages in the field of traffic control and piloting intelligent transport models.

Piloted since 2024, the Hanoi Urban Traffic Management and Operation Center with its management software system and peripheral devices has 12 basic functions including: Traffic monitoring; providing traffic information; traffic control; supporting the handling of traffic safety violations; public transport management; parking management; incident management; traffic infrastructure management; public transport electronic ticket payment management; transport management; traffic demand management; traffic simulation in transport management, exploitation and operation.

AI will be gradually applied to these functions to provide effective solutions, contributing to improving efficiency in city traffic management and operation.

According to traffic experts, smart traffic systems help optimize traffic flows, making traffic smooth. Thereby, saving travel time, reducing fuel costs and the number of vehicles participating in traffic. At the same time, contributing to reducing emissions that pollute the environment, reducing the possibility of traffic accidents...

Contribute to improving the effectiveness of monitoring and handling violations

Hanoi currently has more than hundreds of traffic surveillance cameras operating 24/7, recording violations on the roads. Data from the cameras will be transmitted directly to the Traffic Command Center (Hanoi Traffic Police Department) for the authorities to monitor, analyze and handle.

With smart surveillance cameras, traffic situations on many streets, intersections, conflicts, traffic collisions,... are continuously updated to the center. Car and motorbike license plates are clearly recorded by cameras in real time.

In addition, the City is expanding the deployment of smart surveillance camera systems, integrating AI to support security and order maintenance and traffic monitoring more effectively.

Specifically, the City Police are expanding the surveillance network with 4 projects to install 3,700 more AI cameras to improve the effectiveness of ensuring security and order and traffic management. The new system will be able to recognize faces and license plates, helping to verify identities in security-related incidents.

At the same time, the system also monitors and detects traffic violations, giving real-time warnings of unsafe risks. In addition, this camera system will be integrated with smart operating data, allowing for quick response in emergency situations...

A representative of the Hanoi Traffic Police Department said that with the current camera system, if people do not voluntarily comply, or only comply when the Traffic Police are present, the cameras will record and notify the on-duty checkpoints on the road for handling.

The reasons for forgetting to bring documents or losing documents to avoid being detained are not convincing, when just looking up on the current application software will give the parameters of name, age, vehicle owner and violation history so that the traffic police can handle it according to regulations.

In addition, installing AI cameras also helps the city apply it in many other areas such as detecting sidewalk encroachment and littering to keep the city cleaner; supporting security, detecting incidents on the road to ensure people's safety; providing data for urban planning to help Hanoi develop in a more systematic and scientific direction. This is the foundation of a smart city.

This trend not only helps to improve the effectiveness of monitoring and handling violations, but also contributes to transparency in the implementation of tasks, minimizing disputes between authorities and traffic participants when implementing reminders and penalties.
