Why does the Galaxy Z Fold7 still have the same battery capacity?

Why doesn't the Galaxy Z Fold7 get a battery upgrade? Samsung has officially explained the reason, related to the thin, light design and optimizing the space inside the device.

The Galaxy Z Fold7 continues to disappoint by retaining the same 4,400 mAh battery capacity from 2021. This is a big minus compared to users' expectations for improved battery life. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Flip7 is highly appreciated for its significant upgrade in battery capacity. The contrast between the two models makes many people question Samsung's product strategy. It seems that the company is prioritizing a thin and light design over long-lasting use on the Z Fold7.

In response to the wave of questions from the user community, Samsung has finally given an official response. The company said that keeping the battery intact was a deliberate choice, stemming from the desire to maintain a thin and light design and ensure space for other components, instead of racing for capacity at all costs.

According to SamMobile, Samsung explained that the decision not to upgrade the battery for the Galaxy Z Fold7 was based on actual feedback from users. The company realized that the two customer groups of Z Flip and Z Fold have very different needs, leading to different design priorities.

Galaxy Z Fold7 prioritizes a slim and lightweight design over upgraded battery capacity.

Specifically, Galaxy Z Flip users often want improved battery life - which has been met in the new version. Meanwhile, Galaxy Z Fold users appreciate factors such as a high-quality camera system, a spacious, easy-to-use external screen, and especially a slim, lightweight overall design that is more convenient to carry.

Samsung seems to have bet on design when deciding to keep the Galaxy Z Fold7 as the thinnest and lightest foldable phone it has ever made. With this move, Samsung hopes that the improvement in portability and grip will be more appealing to users than the battery capacity upgrade.

However, this choice also shows that Samsung has not yet deployed silicon-carbon battery technology - a step forward that many competitors such as HONOR and vivo are applying. This type of battery helps foldable devices to be both thin and light while possessing a "huge" battery, such as 5,820 mAh on HONOR Magic V5 or 6,000 mAh on vivo X Fold 5.

Continuing to use traditional battery technology makes it difficult for Samsung to increase battery capacity without affecting the size of the device, which becomes a major barrier when considering the need to use the device for a long time on a single charge - a factor that foldable users are increasingly interested in.

The Galaxy Z Fold7 focuses on a streamlined look rather than increased battery capacity.

In a race with rivals that are constantly pushing the limits of design and battery performance, Samsung's decision with the Z Fold7 may be a safe move - but it also carries risks as users increasingly expect more from a high-end foldable flagship.

Many experts believe that the Galaxy Z Fold line, with its two large screens – one phone-like, one tablet-like – really needs a high-capacity battery. With the need to multitask, entertain and work on a large screen, the Z Fold7 clearly consumes more energy than the compact Z Flip7.

However, Samsung has chosen a different direction: focusing on thin design and portability for its foldable flagship. This is a strategic decision, prioritizing aesthetics and the experience of holding rather than pursuing "buffalo" battery life like some competitors are doing.

So the final choice will depend on your needs: If you need a device that’s sleek, portable, and good-looking, the Z Fold7 might be the right name. But if you prioritize a phone that can last all day without needing to be charged, you’ll probably want to think twice before you put down your money.
