From September 17-19, the 38th Session of the International Association of Academies of Sciences (IAAS) took place at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus with the theme "Modern macro trends in the development of world science: new challenges and opportunities."

Delegates from 16 countries attended the meeting, including leading scientists from scientific academies and major scientific and research centers in Belarus, Russia, China, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Cuba, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

Professor, Academician Chau Van Minh led a delegation of scientists from the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) to attend and contribute opinions at the meeting.

According to VNA correspondents in Eastern Europe, reports at the meeting highlighted the importance of basic research, while emphasizing the direction of developing new technologies in ensuring national security and position.

The reports also highlight the role of science, technology and innovation in responding to climate change, preventing natural disasters and protecting public health; as well as the need to promote interdisciplinary research in natural sciences and social sciences to preserve heritage, strengthen national identity and enhance cultural dialogue in the context of globalization.

Many discussions from the Academies appreciated the cooperation between national scientific organizations, opening up new opportunities to jointly address global challenges.

In the report “The role of basic research in strategic technology development in Vietnam,” VAST analyzed the role of academic science in shaping cutting-edge technology in the world today as well as the influence and spread of science and technology in the sustainable development process of each country.

With the image of a “strategic technology tree,” VAST considers basic research to be the nourishing root and the “bloodline” path to building technological autonomy.

Based on the practical experience of the success of mRNA vaccines, the leading position in semiconductor technology, or advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and new energy all stemming from long-term investments in basic research, VAST believes that developing basic research is the foundation for shaping core technology, strategic technology and a trend for autonomous science globally.

In bilateral discussions on the sidelines of the meeting with the Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow State University, Kazakhstan Academy of Sciences, etc., VAST shared practical experiences in the process of building and developing Vietnam's leading national research units such as universities under the Academy, connecting postgraduate training with specialized research units, and supporting bilateral research projects with member organizations.
